 Hammerton Junction Legend
One of the signalmen at Hammerton Junction was a local fl marketeer, eventually being apprehended in possession of thousands of yards of nylon, which the Americans used for parachutes.
Although the Ramsey branch from Holme closed during 1963, the former MR route to Rugby via Yarwell Junction is the subject of an electrification scheme.
The narrow guage system has been taken over by a preservation group, which is busy restoring locos and is run as a somewhat erratic public attraction, in competition with a larger group of enthusiasts involved in running standard guage steam up the A1 at wansford.

The 15 miles round trip along the Nene Valley Railway passes through the delightful Nene Park, from the eastern terminus at Peterborough, past the Railway's headquarters at Wansford Station, into the haunted Wansford tunnel, and finally to the tranquil setting of Yarwell Junction.
Yarwell Junction - there is no platform at Yarwell, and passengers may not alight here.
It is the site of a junction which made the Nene Valley line a very important cross country through route.

Yarwell was the largest of the viaducts, situated at grid reference TL 076969, and, amazingly, it's still there as the westernmost stub of the Nene Valley Railway, just beyond Wansford Tunnel.
Before the Severn Tunnel was opened between Pilning and Severn Tunnel Junction (on the Welsh side), a ferry service was provided for the benefit of rail passengers.
The upper plaque reads: "This plaque is to commemorate the crossings of John and Charles Wesley, founders of Methodism, on their journeys to Wales and Ireland from the ferry near the English stones during the 18th century.

9466 and the TPO at Yarwell Junction, the first time this has occurred in the three visits to Wansford that 814 has made.
This occurred on Sunday due to an operational mistake, which meant that 9466 could not run round its train at Wansford, the easiest solution was to run to Yarwell when the section to Yarwell became clear.
On the Sunday the TPO even managed to do a run from Yarwell Junction to Peterborough, the longest run it has ever made in preservation.

The line from Rugby having closed in 1966 but the part from Yarwell junction to the quarries at Nasssington and the present Nene Valley Railway were not lifted strait away.

The Great Northern Railway opened a line from Stamford to a junction with the Nene Valley line just east of Wansford on 9th August 1867 and Wansford became a major junction when the LNWR opened their new line from Yarwell Junction (just west of Wansford) to Seaton on 1st November 1879.
In 1974 the Peterborough Development Corporation bought a section of the Nene Valley line between Longville and Yarwell Junctions and leased it to the Peterborough Railway Society to operate the railway.
Between 1974 and May 1977 the line was upgraded to passenger standards and on 24 May the Railway Inspector passed the railway as fit for passenger carrying operations and the Nene Valley Railway between Wansford and Orton Mere was officially opened on 1 June 1977.

It has been suggested that Yarwell Junction be merged into this article or section.
Its importance was increased a few years later when the Great Northern Railway constructed another line, via Sutton, Southorpe and Barnack to Stamford, on the Midland Railway line.
However, no fixed date has been set for this development, and it is uncertain if the project will ever go ahead.

This was not the case because at Greenhill Lower Junction the drive stopped the train at a green signal.
After a short call on the signal telephone it turned to red and then we were routed direct via Lenzie and the Cowlairs curve (not that I needed it having done the Sundays Edinburgh-Oban).
To get the track in as far as Yarwell Junction the Nord 4-6-0 had to be taken, but only back to Wansford, for the Deltic back to Orton Mere.

The loco is seen here running round a train at Wansford before being towed up to Yarwell Junction before taking charge of a Peterborough train.
Looking superb as usual, 56057 basks in the sun between turns in the yard at Wansford accompanied by one of the many industrial shunters at the Nene Valley.

This will leave the Blisworth branch at Yarwell junction, cutting 15 miles off the present route to Rugby.

 Six Bells Junction
We carried on south from the station to Fletton Junction where we turned off and took the short link line to the Nene Valley Railway.
At Orton Mere we swapped the brick for a teddy bear - D9516 - which made a lot of noise hauling load 12 over the length of the line to Wansford (we could hear it from our vantage point in the rear coach!).
We left on time for the short run to Yarwell Mill then D9523 took over for the trip back to Orton Mere.

Wellingborough London Road has been completely obliterated, most of the station site is now under the A45/A509 road improvements.
Wellingborough London Road was an important junction between the LNWR's Northampton - Peterborough line and a spur from the Midland main line giving the Midland access to Northhampton where it had it's own temporary station near Bridge Street.
There are also proposals for a link with the ECML which would allow trains to run into Peterborough Station.
