On March 31, 2005, the towns of Kashima, Mihonoseki, Shimane, Shinji, Tamayu and Yatsuka and the village of Yakumo (all from Yatsuka District) merged with the city of Matsue to form the new city of Matsue.
On October 1, 2005, the towns of Nima and Yunotsu from Nima District merged with the city of Oda to form the new city of Oda.
On October 1, 2005, the towns of Asahi, Kanagi, Misumi and Yasaka from Naka District merged with the city of Hamada to form the new city of Hamada.

 Association for Asia Research- Sagi-mai (White Heron Dance)
Sagi-mai (White Heron Dance) is an ancient religious rite held at Yasaka Shrine in Tsuwano Town at the west edge of Shimane Prefecture.
On July 20 and 27, two dancers dressed like a pair of white herons, male and female, perform an elegant dance at the traditionally-appointed 11 locations in town.
The event was temporarily discontinued because of war, but Yasaka Shrine acquired it again directly from Kyoto and resumed the tradition in the mid 17th century.

Hanshi Miura Takeyuki (Hidefusa is his kenshi name) was born January 5, 1922 (11th year of the Taisho era) in the Shimane Prefecture.
The family line of Fujiwara Michinaga is a Shinto Priest lineage, now a Shinto Priest himself he works on the grounds of Yasaka shrine in Neyagawa-shi Osaka.
In 1933 (8th year of Showa) when he 11 he was studying kendo under Ishitobi Sensei who graduated from the Budo Senmon Gakko, during wartime he studied Jukendo and in 1959 (34th year of Showa) after the war he was allowed to practice Budo again.

Every year, thousands come to the Kishibojin Temple area to buy morning glory plants from hundreds of street stalls.
'Shiman Rokusen-nichi' means 'day of 46,000' and it is said that a visit to Sensou-ji Temple on these days gets you the credit for visiting on 46,000 normal days.
Many thousands of people turn out and hundreds of stalls sell potted hozuki (ground cherry) plants and wind chimes until midnight.

 Miura Takeyuki iaijutsu grootmeester
Culminating more than forty years of martial arts training, including over fifteen years of iaido and other samurai weapons, Miura Hanshi founded the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai in May 1975.
He established its Hombu Dojo (Headquarters) on the grounds of Yasaka Jinja, in the Yasaka District of Neyagawa City in Osaka.
Among the rankings currently held by Miura Hanshi are 8th dan in Koryu Kakushu Bujutsu from the Zen Nippon Kobudo Sogo Renmei (awarded in May, 1975), and 9th dan Hanshi in iaido conferred in April, 1992 by the Dai-Nippon Butoku-Kai.
