It was fought on 14-15 June 1904 between the Japanese Second Army under General Yasukata Oku and the Russian First Siberian Army Corps under Lieutenant General Georgii Stakelberg.
After the Battle of Nanshan, Japanese General Yasukata Oku, commander of the Japanese 2nd Army, occupied and repaired the piers at Dalny, which had been abandoned almost intact by the fleeing Russians.
General Oku's Second army was restructured into the 3rd, 4th and 5th Divisions and an under strength 6th Division, with a total strength of 36,000 infantry, 2,000 cavalry and 216 artillery pieces.

It took place on 25 May 1904 across a two-mile wide defense line across the narrowest part of the Liaotung peninsula, covering the approaches to Port Arthur and on the 116 meter high Nanshan hill, outside the present-day city of Dalian, Liaoning, China.
After the Japanese victory at the Yalu River, the Japanese Second Army commanded by General Yasukata Oku landed on the Liaotung peninsula, only some 60 miles from Port Arthur.
General Oku had committed all of their reserves, and both sides had used up most of their artillery ammunition.

By the start of the Russo-Japanese War, Yuhi (now a colonel) was assigned to the Japanese Second Army as a staff officer under General Yasukata Oku.
After promotion to major general in 1907, Yuhi would continue to serve under Oku following the war as chief of the Army General Staff's Operations Section, serving until his promotion to lieutenant general and accepting the position of commandant of the Army Staff College in 1914.
Remaining in this post through most of Japan's involvement during World War I, Yuhi was granted his first battlefield commands as leading the 15th Infantry and Guards Divisions before becoming as chief of staff of the of the Siberian Expeditionary Army in 1918.

Born in Fukuoka to a samurai family of the Kokura domain in Buzen Province, joined the military forces of the nearby Choshu domain in their struggle to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate and bring about the Meiji Restoration.
