Yasushi Inoue (井上 靖 Inoue Yasushi, May 6, 1907 – January 29, 1992) was a Japanese writer whose range of genres included poetry, essays, short fiction, and novels.
Although often remembered for his serious historical fiction of ancient Japan and the Asian continent, Inoue's work also included semi-autobiographical novels and short fiction of great humor, pathos, and wisdom like Shirobamba and Asunaro Monogatari, which depicted the setting of the author's own life--Japan of the early to mid twentieth century--in revealing perspective.

Bookreporter.com - THE COUNTERFEITER by Yasushi Inoue
Yasushi Inoue was one of Japan's most beloved writers.
Truth and fiction combine in the lives of Inoue's characters, and they always seem to be floating on the ether between dimensions --- the reader finds themselves in a hybrid, almost psychadelic world of feeling and emotion, caught up in the daily activities of everyday people.
There is life beneath the surface of each hard-crusted, long-told tale, and Inoue uses all the pathos of his art to examine the life of his countrymen from all sides.

It will examine the manner in which Inoue’s portrayals of childhood reflect his concern—which also characterizes his approach in historical works—about forgetfulness and discovery, about myopia and insight, and the limitations and opportunities of narrative in post-war Japan.
