According to the Handbook of American Indians (Hodge, 1907, 1910), from enyaeva, "sun," and pai, "people," and thus signifying "people of the sun," but the southeastern Yavapai interpreted it to mean "crooked-mouth people," that is, a "sulky" people who do not agree with other peoples (fide Gifford, 1936).
By Executive Orderof September 15, 1903, the old reservation was set aside for their use, and the claims of the white settlers purchased under Act of April 21, 1904.

The Western Apache group calling themselves, Dilzhe'e and popularly known as the "Tonto Apache" utilized the lands to the north, east and south; while the Yavapai's known as Wipukyipaya were using country to the north, the west and the south.
However, this Reserve was rescinded by Presidential Order in 1875 and all of the people, Yavapai and Apache alike, numbering around 1,700, were forcibly marched to the San Carlos agency east of Phoenix.
By the late 1890's the reservation system was breaking down and beginning in 1900 the survivors of the removal began drifting back to their home country in small family groups.

The Yavapai also were often called "Apaches," because their lifestyle was similar, but in reality they were a completely independent people.
The Yavapai bands in the Pinal Mountain region called themselves Kewevkapaya, or "people of the east." Another way of putting that is "people of the sun." The Kewevkapaya still exist, most of them at the Fort McDowell Reservation near Mesa.
