Chester Yawl Rowing Boat Kits - Chesapeake Light Craft LLC
The Chester Yawl is based on the Whitehall and adopts its distinctive plumb bow and “wineglass” transom.
At 15’ long, the Chester Yawl is about the right size for easy trailering (or even cartopping), and the payload of 450 pounds means that two or three adults may safely set out for a picnic or even a camping trip.
The term “Yawl,” by the way, doesn’t refer to a sailing rig but to an older definition of a small craft carried aboard a large vessel to carry the captain ashore on errands.

yawl   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The true "yawl" is the Yarmouth yawl used in England on the north coast and is descended from the Scandinavian "yol."
The classic yawl is a fore-and-aft rigged boat, with the main mast stepped forward and a small mizzen mast stepped in the stern aft or behind the rudder-head.
Today the only way the yawl and ketch differ is in the placing of the mizzen-mast, aft of the rudder-head on a yawl and forward of the rudder-head on the ketch.

 Yawl
A yawl is a sailing craft[?] similar to a sloop with an additional mizzen mast[?] behind the main mast.
The yawl is often confused with a ketch but the ketch has the mizzen mast forward of the rudder post whereas the mizzen on a yawl is aft of the rudder post.
The yawl has generally fallen out of favor.

One of the benefits of YAWL being an open source initiative is that it is open to anyone interested in contributing to furthering YAWL and its support environment.
Also, the YAWL environment has a service-oriented architecture which we claim should make it quite flexible in terms of the addition of new functionality.
YAWL could be used in "normal" lectures, but also in a seminar/workshop setting.

 BDB - How Yawl
The word in question is actually "yawl" and refers to a small fishing vessel of a type much used off the coast of New Orleans.
Many years ago a local New Orleans fisherman met up with one of his colleagues as they were on their way to work one morning.
(Incidentally, this contraction, as practiced by residents of the Deep South, is known to linguistic experts as "Drawling the Yawl".) Visiting foreigners from New York, upon hearing this exchange, wrongly interpreted the "yawl" portion to mean "you all" or "y'all".

The childhood of this boat was somewhat unhappy, -- and as she grew into shape she was quizzed unmercifully, and people shook their heads very wisely, as they did at the first Rob Roy canoe.
At a solemn pause in the repast the yawl, without other warming than a loud splash, perversely turned over to the wrong side, with deck to sea and wind, and every single thing exactly the contrary of wheat was proper.
An excellent cure for all such little mishaps is to "imagine it is tomorrow morning," for in the morning one is sure to forget all the night's troubles, and so with the fiery rising sun on the sails we are floating down to Dover.

 What is a Canoe Yawl?
In general, a canoe yawl can be thought of as a boat, very similar to the decked sailing canoe, only bigger.
"The term yawl has nothing to do with rig; it is an indefinitely old sea term for a sea-coast model of boat which was of long form and light construction, used for both sailing and rowing, without fixed ballast; such boats to this day are the Yarmouth yawls, the Norway yawls and the coble.
It needs no proof that a vessel 20 to 24 feet long with a breadth of 5 to 6 feet and a ton of lead under her is not a canoe; while at the same time she may be a sloop, cutter, or ketch in rig; but the same name, 'canoe-yawl' has stuck to her....

 Navy Yawl
In 1939, the Luders Marine Construction Company designed a 44 foot yawl for use as the United States Naval Academy's sail training craft, and twelve mahogany yawls were delivered to Annapolis by 1943.
Starting in 1963, these were replaced by twelve fiberglass yawls, which were basically identical to the wooden boats, with the exception of a new cabin layout, aluminum spars, and an inboard diesel engine.
When the wooden yawls were replaced in the 1960's, the Academy got rid of the old wooden boats, many of which came into use at MWRs and Navy sailing clubs, including Patuxent River's.
