  H. A. Guerber — Myths of Northern Lands — Chapter 11   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
As god of hunting and archery, he is represented with a quiver full of arrows and a huge bow, and as the yew furnishes the best wood for the manufacture of these weapons, it is said to have been his favorite tree.
To have a supply of suitable wood ever at hand ready for use, Uller took up his abode at Ydalir, the vale of yews, where it was always very damp indeed.
As winter-god, Uller, or Oller, as he was also called, was considered second only to Odin, whose place he usurped during his absence in the winter months of the year, when he exercised full sway over Asgard and Midgard, and even, according to some authorities, took possession of Frigga, Odin’s wife, as in.

Ydalir is the Manchester group of The Vikings, the UK's oldest and largest Dark Age re-enactment society.
In Norse mythology Ydalir ("Yew Dales") was the home of Ull the winter god.
As we are based in Manchester, a place also noted for prodigious rainfall, we chose Ydalir Vikings as an approprite name.

The Aesir & The Elves: Thor and Egil
Grimnismal 5: Ydalir it is called, where Ull has himself a dwelling made.
Ull is named between these two representatives of the known god-clans and his home Ydalir is mentioned in the same breath, so to speak, as Alfheim.
The name of his home, Ydalir means literally "the yew-dales." Yew is the common wood used to make bows all over Northern Europe.

 Ydalir

We have never actually calculated the yardage for making a tent, as we have always bought the fabric and cut the tent according to our cloth, so to speak.

 [No title]
Not surprisingly, Ull's home Ydalir is associated, by textual proximity and topic, with Thor's.
The reference to the elves at the beginning of strophe 4 and the end of strophe 5 indicate a relationship between what lies in between, namely Ydalir.
The poet's clear intention is to associate Ull with Thor and the Elves.

 Northvegr - Rydberg's Teutonic Mythology
Vidar's grass and brush-grown realm is not a part of Asgard, but is the large plain on which, in Ragnarok, Odin is to fall in combat with Fenrir (Grímnismál 17; see No. 39).
When Ull is said to have his halls in Ydalir, this must be based on a similar reason, and Ydalir must be the land where he was reared and which he inherited after his father, the great archer.
When Grímnismál enumerates the homes of the gods, the series of them begins with Thrudheim, Thor's realm, and next thereafter, and in connection with Alfheim, is mentioned Ydalir, presumably for the reason that Thor's land and Orvandil-Egil's were, as we have seen, most intimately connected in mythology.

SingaporeMoms - Parenting Encyclopedia - Yew
It was traditionally used to make bows, especially the longbow.
Consequently, it is not surprising that, in Norse mythology, the god of the bow, Ull's abode had the name Ydalir (Yew dales).
Most longbow wood used in northern Europe was imported from Iberia, where climatic conditions are better for growing the knot-free yew wood required.

Thor's home Thrundheim is associated with Alfheim, no doubt because Thor often travels to the land of the elves, on his way to the land of the giants:
Ull's home Ydalir is mentioned in between because Thor's stepson Ull himself is of elven descent.
Yew is the wood most commonly used to make bows in the north.

Last weekend, Olivia threw her poles and cursed the snow (learning to telemark can be frustrating, and I'm an overly demanding coach), but I quickly made supplication on bended knees to ULL that he not be angered and allow us continued admission to Ydalir.
Still, completion of the upcoming adventure is not guaranteed.
