Ye Jianying (simplified Chinese: 叶剑英) (Wade-Giles:Yeh Chien-ying) (April 28, 1897-October 22, 1986) was a Chinese Communist general and the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress from 1978 to 1983.
Ye survived the Long March, during which he assisted Liu Bocheng in directing the crossing of the Yangtze River, and became director of the offices that liaised with the KMT after 1936, first in Xi'an, then in Nanjing and finally in Chongqing.

Ye Jianying (pronounced Yeh Jee an Yeeng) was born in April 28, 1897, into a well-to-do merchant family north of Guangzhou (Canton).
After Mao's Army had slipped away, Ye was able to secure a map that had fallen to the floor and he and General Yang Shangkun (who later became the President of the PRC) were able to slip away on foot and alone.
Ye died October 22, 1989 at the age of ninety-two.

 The Taiwan Question and Reunification of China
In a statement on 30 September 1981 the late Chairman Ye Jianying of the NPC Standing Committee further elaborated the policy and principles for the settlement of the Taiwan question.
He affirmed that "after the country is reunified, Taiwan can enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region" and proposed that talks be held on an equal footing between the ruling Parties on each side of the Straits, namely, the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang.
