Years of the Lamps - Definition, explanation
Tolkien, the Years of the Lamps are one of the three great time-periods of Arda.
The initial shape of Arda, chosen by the Valar, was of a symmetrical continent lit by two lamps: one in the continent's north, and one in the south, made out of the misty light that veiled the barren ground.
In the middle, where the light of the lamps mingled, the Valar dwelt at the island of Almaren.

 Lamps in Antiquity
Lamps were not slip cast, that is created from a liquid clay mixture, but rather were press moulded, where the clay is rolled into a sheet, and hand pressed into the mould, and then the two halves pressed together.
After a drying period, the lamp could be removed, trimmed and pierced, and put with others to be fired in the kilns later on.
While popularly called a Herodian lamp, the use of this style extended well before and after the reign of Herod the Great and Herod Agrippa for they are known from sites dating to between the 1st Century BC and the 2nd Century AD.

 Lace Lamps
The earliest lamps were hollowed out stones filled with animal fat and a wick of some kind absorbing the fat and acting as a light source.
The former are bags in which the flasks are kept safe when not in use during the lighter times of the year and the latter are used to line the sockets upon which the flasks are rested.
Certainly we (lacemakers) know this arrangement as a lacemakers lamp, but it obvious that this arrangement was but a device for magnifying the light of a candle that was used by many artisans to illuminate their work and indeed by the gentry for writing at their desk.

Once we were able to pinpoint the fate of mercury throughout the lamp life and standardize the dosing, we experimented with decreased mercury levels.
Philips ALTO lamps provide a reduc-tion in mercury content of more than 80% when compared to standard fluorescent lamps with no loss in performance.** This mercury reduction is a dramatic improvement in comparison with the industry average for mercury content in a 40-watt T-12 fluorescent lamp of 22.8 mg.
After years of testing lamps, many operating to the end of their lives, we concluded that the entire population of ALTO lamps meet the statistical requirements outlined by the Federal Government.

 Collecting Kerosene Lamps
In less than forty years gas lamps had replaced them in the larger cities and towns and few survived the rapid conversion to electric lighting in the early 1900’s.
Kosmos lamps were readily identified by their unusual shaped chimney, which was waisted in quite heavily around the base, the effect being to substantially increase the draft available to the flame, which in turned improved combustion.
These lamps were unique in their use of a round wick to provide an even, non -flickering flame and a rare earth mantle that glowed to produce a light output equivalent to that of a 60watt light bulb.

The Art of Troubleshooting Arc Discharge Lamps
Shortly afterward, the open-circuit voltage is applied across the lamp, or lamps, to begin arc conduction.
For the lamp to start within the voltage range of the ballast, it is necessary to excite the gas fill inside the lamp by means of an external voltage; thus the excitation ionizes the gas fill.
While both types of lamps use a mogul base, a pulse-start lamp's socket (and ballast) is incompatible with a pinched tube MH lamp's socket (and ballast), and visa-versa.

Parallel wired C-7 lamp strings with their independent burning candelabra base lamps were much more popular now, but their high heat and the fact that most household electrical circuits could only support six strings of seven lamps on a tree was a decorating hindrance, and America was ready for something new in decorative Christmas lighting.
The tiny lamps, which drew little current, were offered in strings of 35 lamps, and contained shunt devices so that the failure of a lamp or two would not cause the entire string to go dark.
While the failure of one or two lamps was not a problem, when more than that began to fail it would hasten the death of the remaining lamps due to the steadily increasing voltage they were receiving.

 Halogen Torchiere Replacement Technology
When Siminovitch's group first saw reports of the fire hazard and high energy use of these lamps more than two years ago, they began doing photometric tests in their lab, measuring the light and heat output of halogen torchieres on the market.
Halogen lamps burn at 1,000 degrees F -- so hot that you can't hold your hands over them--and they heat the ceiling and nearby walls, creating the danger that nearby flammable materials such as drapes will catch fire.
Over the life of the lamp (assumed to be about 7 years), it will save $136 and use 2,000 kilowatt-hours less electricity, assuming energy costs 8cents per kilowatt-hour.

White Paper - HID Lamp Dimming
If the lamps are dimmed instead in response to a signal from an occupancy sensor or time-programmable controller indicating the space is unoccupied, significant energy savings can occur during these periods, but the lamps will be able to achieve full light output quickly when the space becomes occupied again.
When the space is occupied, the lamp is brought from its reduced light output to about 80% of light output, followed by a brief warm-up time between 80% and 100% of light output.
Depending on the lamp type and wattage, in a bi-level dimming system, the Low level may be 15-40% of light output and 30-60% of wattage.

Since the tanning lamp is one of the most crucial variables in the indoor tanning equation, salon owners must not sacrifice quality for price when purchasing them for their salons.
While the former owner had purchased lamps that were among the least expensive ones on the market, the new owner soon realized that their results were less than desirable.
After monitoring his clients' tanning results over a period of time, the enterprising owner began to notice a pattern: Clients were satisfied initially with the color they got after their first visit to the salon, but once their tan faded they had to come in more often to maintain it.

ACS :: Tanning Lamps Increase Skin Cancer Risk
Past studies have already said that the use of tanning lamps might add to the incidence of melanoma, another, often deadlier, form of skin cancer, they wrote.
But few studies had looked at the link between tanning lamps and the more common basal cell and squamous cell cancers, according to the article.
It may have taken 15 years to get a good study on tanning beds, but it can take about that long for certain forms of skin cancer to show up, said Alan Geller, RN, MPH, of Boston University Medical Center Hospital, another member of the ACS skin cancer advisory group.
