Figure skating at the 2002 Winter Olympics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On February 15 the ISA and IOC, in a joint press conference, announced that it would award a second gold medal to Salé and Pelletier, and that Marie-Reine Le Gougne, the French judge implicated in collusion, was guilty of "misconduct" and was suspended effective immediately.
Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze are allowed to keep their gold medal as well.

ESPN.com: SKATING - Russians simply dazzling in pairs short program
Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze won the silver medal in the Nagano Olympics and were set to dominate for the next four years.
On their throw triple loop jump, not only did she travel almost half the width of the ice, but she landed on the edge of her blade with the precision of a knife thrower.
The Chinese might match Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze when it comes to technique -- their throw double twist was so big he could have done a spin or two before she came down -- but they still lack the Russians' polish.

 TIME: The Miracle on Ice
Today, as Berezhnaya heads to the Olympics having recently taken first in the European pairs championships, her speech is fine, her gait normal, and her skating nearly perfect.
As soon as Berezhnaya got out of the hospital, Sikharulidze, a friend who was having problems with his skating partner, whisked her off to St. Petersburg to see Moskvina.
For Sikharulidze and Berezhnaya this is the ultimate compliment, especially considering how new their partnership is. Most pairs take four or five years just to get attuned to one another, never mind becoming Olympic favorites.

Berezhnaya's landings on the throw jumps were also not as smooth as Sale's.
Though the Russians peppered their program with innovative moves--at one point Berezhnaya opened into a spread eagle with Sikharulidze clinging to her in a spiral--Sale and Pelletier were a miracle of unity.

Certainly not Sikharulidze and Berezhnaya, and certainly not Artur Dmitriev and Oksana Kazakova.
There was pensive, determined Yelena, in her sweater and jeans, pretending to stare out a window, in slow motion and with violins mewling, and think about the serious injury (apparently at the hands of a former skating partner/boyfriend, though that was left sketchy in the report) that nearly ended her career and her life.
Berezhnaya stumbled and struggled with her words in this language she appears to know only a little.
