In this version of the program, bicycles are kept at volunteer-run "hubs" or "kiosks" throughout the city.

The group that brought the Yellow Bike program to Peterborough is pedaling to city hall next month, in hopes of securing liability insurance.
While the yellow bicycles hit Peterborough streets July 13, the bike racks or depots have yet to be set up around the city, says Cathy Hooper, one of the Yellow Bike co-ordinators.
The Yellow Bike crew is heading to city hall Aug. 11 to make a presentation, ultimately asking the City for the go-ahead to set up depots.

The group is currently working on a proposal to submit to the city suggesting that some of the 110 repaired bikes at the city landfill site remain in the city to start a Yellow Bike program.
Yellow bikes are uniformly painted bicycles that can be obtained by anyone free of charge at various stations throughout the city and be returned to any station.
In the meantime the priority is to move the bikes out of the snow to a sheltered storage space in order to minimize degradation of the bikes over the winter.

The bikes weren't that good to begin with, most of them rather quickly either got 'stolen' or kept, the ones that I still saw on the streets after a few months all had mechanical problems.
When both systems were in operation, the ten- or more-speed bikes that were capable of being tuned and used with all their speeds were made into Yellow Bikes.
Any bike with shifting problem was converted (crudely, usually by fixing the ders onto one cog/ring combo via the limit screws and cutting the cables) to single-speed and made into Red Bikes.
