A yellow wagtail landed on a piece of floating bark on our pond and had a lovely wash. It's the first I've ever seen.
I agree that the bird was probably a grey wagtail because the yellow wagtail is predominantly a meadowland bird.
We often get winter reports of grey wagtails (yellow wagtails are summer migrants) and a common thread is that they are visiting garden ponds.

These Yellow Wagtails were seen along the sea wall at Felixstowe Ferry in Suffolk during a twitch for a Richard's Pipit.
A Blue-headed Wagtail (apparently of some obscure race "Channel Wagtail") had been present but I failed to see it.
These Yellow Wagtails and some confiding Little-ringed Plover were decent compensation.

The conspicuous yellow on the breast and especially around the tail of a Grey Wagtail causes many novice birdwatchers to think they must have seen a Yellow Wagtail.
To identify one for certain you should look at its back: grey on a Grey Wagtail, yellowy-brown on a Yellow Wagtail.
Grey Wagtails have a much longer, more fl and white tail and show a broad pale wing bar as they fly over.

I was even more thrilled to find it feeding alongside a flavissima Yellow Wagtail.
We also know that the barring on the breast/belly of Great Snipe is very variable.
This attractive subspecies breeds in the British Isles and till this spring there are no confirmed records of this subspecies in Israel.

1 Sand Martin, 1 Yellow wagtail, 8 Turnstone (through the hole in the fence, on the beach to the left).
Note: all of the birds in the EWT reserve are seeming to favour the far fence along from the coast guard station).
Although the tide was ideal the many people out on the mudflats hindered a good count 19 Mediterranean Gull (12 adults (including green A00 and P20), 7 2nd years and a juvenile).
