  Yellow-headed caracara in Suriname
The yellow-headed caracara (lenght 45 cm) has a light yellow-brown head and breast and pale spots on its long and dark wings.
The caracaras themselves are often attacked by others birds like the great kiskadee, that will circle around trying to peck them until they fly away.

The Yellow-headed Caracara, Milvago chimachima, is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae.
The Yellow-headed Caracara is a resident breeding bird from Panama, Trinidad and Tobago south through South America to northern Argentina.
The upperparts are brown with distinctive pale patches on the flight feathers of the wings, and the tail is barred cream and brown.

Caracaras (Polyborinae) are smaller than falcons, have longer necks and legs than falcons, thicker, flatter talons, more rounded wings, a semi-bare face that is often brightly colored, and often glossy fl plumage.

The caracaras eat ticks off of the tapirs, which seem to solicit the caracaras by calling and laying down to have the ticks removed.

While we were still on the grounds of the resort, we saw a chestnut-mandibled toucan, golden-hooded tanagers, a green kingfisher, rufous-naped wrens, rufous-tailed hummingbirds,a yellow-throated euphonia, common tody flycatchers, and a Hoffman's woodpecker.
Along the way we were pleased to see a yellow-headed caracara, some scarlet -rumped tanagers (pacific race), a squirrel cuckoo, blue-fl grassquits, a pair of variable seedeaters, and a lineated woodpecker.
The added bonus of staying there was the birding we did as we headed up the 3 km dirt road to his home.

The birds seemed to glide slowly over a water logged savannah area and then plummet down.
All of the pale coloured bird looks like a Yellow-headed Caracara to me, paricularly the one in flight, not sure about the other one, I suppose it could be a young bird looking at the white in the wings which to some extent matches the adult.

As we passed along this section of the Canal we saw several raptors, some familiar: American Kestrel and Crested Caracara, and some unfamiliar such as the Yellow-headed Caracara* and the Gray Hawk.
From the Pedro Miguel Lock we saw another Yellow-headed Caracara, more Laughing Gulls, 2 Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, 2 Great Kiskadees and 2 Pale-vented Pigeons.

First we passed a roosting place with hundreds of Shiny Cowbirds and Yellow-hooded Blackbirds.
Arriving in an area called Santa Zulema, separated through a canal from Padre Isla there was a lot of activity: tens of Yellow-headed Caracara´s and Oriole Blackbirds, Lined and Caqueta Seedeaters.
Not a bad place for raptors –Cumaceba – with 3 species of Kites, 3 Vultures (Lesser Yellow-headed, Black, Turkey), 3 Hawks (Black-collared, Slate-coloured, Roadside) and 2 Falcons (Laughing and Yellow-headed Caracara).
