Yellowbeard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yellowbeard is a 1983 comedy film, that was co-written and acted by Monty Python member Graham Chapman and David Sherlock, and directed by Mel Damski.
The pirate Yellowbeard (Chapman), having been incarcerated for tax evasion despite his years of terrorising the high seas ("Often forcing his victims to eat their own lips..."), manages to survive the whole of his jail sentence but has not disclosed the whereabouts of his vast treasure.
The Royal Navy then hatches a plot to increase his sentence by a good 140 years, in the hope that he'll escape in a rage to set out for his treasure.

Are you in the mood for a pirate with a little more experience under his swordbelt, a man who takes an old-fashioned sort of pride in raping and robbing and who, if the circumstances are right, will force men to eat their own lips?
Yellowbeard is Graham Chapman's fierce and mighty captain in this classic seafaring movie set in the golden age of piracy.
"Yellowbeard" is a laugh riot, and it deserves to be pulled from the shelf and enjoyed at least once each year.

'YELLOWBEARD,' A 17TH-CENTURY TREASURE HUNT - New York Times
Once Yellowbeard breaks out of prison, 20 years later, an assortment of old enemies and their henchmen, as well as the Queen's Navy, Yellowbeard's putative son, Dan (Martin Hewitt), and the boy's mother (Miss Kahn) all take to the high seas as part of the effort to find and take possession of the plunder.
Despite Yellowbeard's doubts about Dan's true lineage (he's more interested in gardening than killing), the young man is essential to the venture because his mother has had the treasure map tattooed on his head.
What ''Yellowbeard'' establishes is that for even the funniest of performers, a good script may be as essential as pitching is to baseball.

Yellowbeard, a comedy cast with the all-star comedians of the 1980s, is a unique, corny spoof on pirate films.
Like a Mel Brooks movie, Yellowbeard's plot is a series of ridiculous events, á la Airplane, circulating around Yellowbeard's (Graham Chapman) discovery that he has an "intellectual" son.
Brain versus brawn is the film's theme, as Yellowbeard is forced to take his kid on a booty-hunt, since the pirate's ex-wife, Betty (Madeline Kahn), tattooed the treasure map on their child's head.

Yellowbeard has some cult fans, probably owing the Graham Chapman's wild-eyed performance as a crazed old pirate who is allowed to escape from prison so he may be tracked en route to his stash of treasure.

The movie itself is a chaotic mess, in which herds of actors rush from one side of the screen to the other, waving their swords, making threats, and looking lost.
The plot involves the most evil pirate of all time, but as Graham Chapman plays Yellowbeard, he never seems truly evil or even very mean -- and with that anchor gone, the whole plot's meaningless.
There's a funny line or two, a fetching performance by Stacey Nelkin as a young wench, some nonsense about a buried treasure, and then "Yellowbeard" is soon over and soon forgotten.

The film stars three of the original Pythons - Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, and John Cleese - as well as other comedy legends: Marty Feldman, Peter Cook, Spike Miligan, Madeline Kahn, Cheech and Chong, Peter Boyle, Nigel Planer, and Kenneth Mars.
The original idea for "Yellowbeard" came from Keith Moon, drummer for "The Who," who also happened to be a huge Python fan and close friend of Graham Chapman.
Although involved in the early conceptual stages of "Yellowbeard," Keith died on September 7, 1978 from a drug overdose.
