  Japanese yen Summary
The Latinized symbol (¥) for the Yen however, is identical to the one for the Chinese yuan, although the PRC tends to use one crossbar (Ұ) instead of two.
Yen literally means "round object" in Japanese, as yuan does in Chinese, referring to the ancient Chinese coins that were circular in shape and widely used in Japan up to the Tokugawa Period.
The yen lost most of its value during and after World War II; after a period of instability, the yen was pegged at 1 US dollar = ¥360 from April 25, 1949, to until 1971 when the Bretton Woods system collapsed and the value of the Yen began to float.

Japanese yen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The yen or en (Japanese: 円, en, in older Japanese yen) is the currency of Japan.
The Latinized symbol (¥) for the yen however, is identical to the one for the Chinese yuan, although the PRC also uses the single-crossbar Y (Ұ).
In standard Japanese, the yen is pronounced "en" but the spelling and pronunciation of "yen" is standard in English, due to a historical Portuguese transliteration.

Euro sign - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The euro sign is the currency sign used for the euro currency.
The currency sign was presented to the public by the European Commission on December 12, 1996.
The glyph is (according to the European Commission) "a combination of the Greek epsilon [ε], as a sign of the weight of European civilisation; an E for Europe; and the parallel lines crossing through standing for the stability of the euro".

 CNN.com - Japan spends $69bn on yen sales - Nov. 10, 2003
Some analysts said that confirmed Japan's commitment to holding down the yen in the face of market efforts to push it higher against the dollar but others, looking at the detail, detected some weakening in the government's resolve.
The yen's rise, some 6.6 percent against the dollar in July-September, accelerated after a G7 statement calling for more flexible exchange rates, which was interpreted as veiled criticism of the currency policies of Japan and China.
Some analysts said the fact that the Ministry of Finance let the dollar fall to around 110 yen from around 114 yen prior to the G7 meeting could be taken as a sign of a slight change in Japan's currency policy.

Phantom Currency Signs in Japan and Korea | CodeSnipers.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
It is still displayed as a Yen sign in Japan whether in Unicode or not.
Pathnames should be left as they are, but text referring to the yen sign should be converted to the U+00a5 yen sign, especially if the Unicode text will be shared internationally.
Depending on how fullwidth signs were generally used in the text in Japan and Korea, they could alleviate some of the need to repair text that I described because there is no OS-sponsored confusion between them and the path separator, but there are still many concerns as described by Michael in his post.

U.S. Treasury Dept. props up yen - Jun. 17, 1998   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The United States rode to the rescue of the battered Japanese yen Wednesday in a dramatic shift from its recent hands-off approach.
News of the intervention sent the value of the yen soaring to 137 yen to the dollar from 142 late Tuesday.
It also fueled a strong rally on Wall Street as equity investors, who had feared the Asian economic crisis would worsen and the weak yen would eat into the bottom lines of large multinational corporations, breathed a sigh of relief.

Sorting It All Out : I WON to talk about the YEN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Ben is right that making the YEN and the WON also act as path separators would have fixed the problem, but that suggestion is over a decade too late, now.
Although it is a tempting bordering on tantalizing idea since the number or true YEN and WON characters in the wild has to be small given how they are on no keyboards....
Until reaility sets in and I remember that the NLS locale data properly assigns the true YEN and WON for the LOCALE_SCURRENCY fields for the Japanese and Korean locales, which means anyone who has ever used a program that uses GetCurrencyFormat might have them.

 ASCII and the Euro sign
One of the many problems that come with this change is the availability, on computer keyboards, of the sign that was created to designate that currency.
Although newer computers are equipped with fonts that include the Euro sign (ASCII code 0128), and computers sold in Europe have the sign on the keyboard, there are still people in Europe and other parts of the world who are using pre-Euro computers with pre-Euro fonts.
The advantage of doing it this way is that the Euro sign will be coherent with the font you are already using.

Sorting It All Out : And what about the Japanese (Unicode) sort?
Its about the same as the answer about Korean (but the Yen sign U+00a5 is used instead of the Won sign, for obvious reasons).
I do understand the codepoint of the single-byte yen sign in Japanese (non-Unicode) character sets.
Regarding sorting, the number of meaningful Japanese sort orderings does not magically go down to 1 if you use Unicode encoding instead of more common character sets (ANSI code page 932 or other), and Windows does not have a sort ordering that would match my local phone book.
