Yenching University was a notable university in Peking (present-day Beijing) in China.
In 1928 a society, Harvard-Yenching Institute, was joinly founded by Yenching University and Harvard University for the education of humanity and social science in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
After the incorporation of Yenching University to Peking University, some of her alumni and staff founded Yenching College in Hong Kong.

Peking University has been becoming a center for teaching and research, consisting of diverse branches of learning such as pure and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and sciences of management and education.

 Band, William Papers, 1857-1989
At the University of Liverpool, which he entered in the Fall of 1923, he concentrated in the study of physics and graduated with honors in 1926, winning the Oliver J. Lodge Prize.
He was Chairman of the Physics department at Yenching until 1944, where, besides teaching quantum mechanics and relativity, he developed a research program for the MS degree.

 China's Christian Colleges
In 1914, the University owned seventy acres of land in the center of Nanking on which were three dormitories, three lecture halls or recitation buildings, one science hall, one YMCA building, one chapel, one Normal School building, one hospital and dispensary, and thirteen residences.
The University of Nanking was able to return to its Nanking campus in the spring of 1946 after restoration and rehabilitation of the campus had begun in the fall of 1945.
Yenching began operating from its new campus in the fall of 1926, though the Dedication and Formal Opening of the campus were not held until October 1, 1929.

Nankai, Tsinghua, and Peking University moved their undergraduate programs to Kunming in the remote south, and their graduate programs were conducted jointly in Chungking, the wartime capital.The war brought accelerating inflation, for which traditional monetary theory seemed to provide adequate explanatory power.
Yenching University in Peking, probably the best of the missionary colleges in China, continued to operate even under Japanese occupation.
Yenching was able to function with relative autonomy until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941.

In 1946 Soochow University appointed Li to the faculty position of Professor of Biology.
He was stationed at the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, which was headed by Dr. Schramm, his faculty director at Penn from 1943 to 1946.
From 1964 to 1965, he was visiting Professor of Biology and Director of University Biological Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

As I'm sure all of you know, this campus was once home to Yenching University which was founded by American missionaries.
In June of 1919, the first president of Yenching University, John Leighton Stuart, was set to deliver the very first commencement address on these very grounds.
And it must be addressed at the university level, because political leaders will never be willing to adopt environmental measures if they believe it will lead to large-scale unemployment or more poverty.

Younger Americans who had two years or more of university were likely to get good jobs and have their incomes grow.
Younger Americans who didn't go to university at all were likely to get jobs where their incomes declined and were much more likely to be unemployed.

I was fortunate to have met him when he visited Florida AandM University in 1983, and I am happy to have the opportunity to submit this tribute, prepared by colleagues in Nanjing, to one historic American mayfly scientist.
In 1927, he entered Yenching University, Peking, and graduated with an MS in Zoology in 1929; his MS dissertation was entitled "Gryllidae in China." Because of his outstanding work at Yenching, he was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to Cornell University, completing there his PhD degree, with honors, in 1932.
He served as a professor in, sequentially, Soochow University, Yenching University, St. John’s University, Shanghai First Medical College (with a long term as Dean of the Biology Department), Soochow University (1938-1952), and Professor-in-Charge of the Board of Studies of Parasitology, Shanghai First Medical College (1952-1984).

The main body of the Edgar Snow Papers was donated by his widow, Lois Wheeler Snow, to the University of Missouri in 1986.
Ownership of the collection passed to the University Archives in increments over several years with the last installment transferred in 1989.
The University Archives also holds other collections of special interest related to Edgar Snow, including the papers of his sister, Mildred Mackey, his brother, Howard Snow, and his nephew, John Snow.

By 1954, Tunghai University in Taichung was established, with the United Board over the years providing more funding for this university than for any other Board related institution in Asia.
One way he manifested this transformation was in his insistence on retaining as much as possible of the magnificent old architecture of China in the design of the three universities he led: Shantung Christian University in Weixian, Cheeloo University in Jinan, and Yenching University in Beijing.

Then in 1927 she married Walter William, founder of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and University President, 1931-1935.

Haruo Aoki, Professor Emeritus, received his BA from Hiroshima University in English in 1953, his MA in English from UCLA in 1958, and his PhD in Linguistics from U.C.Berkeley in 1965.
After teaching Chinese, Tibetan, and Sanskrit for 12 years at the University of Washington in Seattle, he arrived at Berkeley in 1963, where he taught Chinese Language and historical linguistics until his retirement in 1988.

He was taught English at Yenching University in Beijing from 1928-1939, and was unofficial "official" photographer for the University.
The collection consists of memorabilia from Mead's tenure at Yenching University and artifacts from China, along with an extensive collection of photographs.
In the summer of 1928 he returned to Beijing with his family (wife and now five children) to join the faculty of Yenching University, where he taught English, with the emphasis on spoken English.

The Harvard-Yenching Library is the University's primary resource for research materials on traditional and modern East Asia.
A Japanese collection was similarly launched in 1914 when two Japanese professors, Hattori Unokichi and Anesaki Masaharu, both of Tokyo Imperial University, came to lecture at Harvard and donated several important groups of Japanese publications to Widener Library.
In 1928, the Harvard-Yenching Institute, an independent, nonprofit foundation closely associated with Harvard and, originally, with Yenching University and other Chinese universities, was formed for the dual purpose of promoting higher education in the humanities and social sciences in Asia, and Asian studies at Harvard.
