Under the Turks, whose rule dates from the end of the 15th century, Kerch was a military port; and as such it plays a part in the Russo-Turkish wars.
Captured by the Russians under Dolgorukov in 1771, it was ceded to them along with Yenikale by the peace of Kuchuk-Kainarji, and it became a centre of Russian naval activity.
Its importance was greatly impaired by the rise of Odessa and Taganrog; and in 1820 the fortress was dismantled.

Large Mithradates Ladder leading on top of the Mount Mithradates, contains 428 footsteps, built in 1833–1840 under the guidance of Italian architect A.

Captain Frank Cunningham Scott was gazetted an Ensign (by purchase) 24th November 1852, was promoted Lieutenant (by purchase) 18th August 1854, and Captain (without purchase) 6th September 1855.
Captain Scott served with the 42nd (The Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-1855, including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, expedition to Kertch and Yenikale, siege and fall of Sebastopol (medals and clasps, 5th Class of the Mejedie).
