Barbra Streisand's "Yentl" is the story of a courageous young woman at the turn of the century who discovers that in matters of the heart and mind, nothing's impossible.
Nehemiah Persoff appears as Yentl's father, a wise and sensitive scholar who has a profound effect upon his daughter's life, and Steven Hill is featured as Hadass' father, whose influence over his own daughter's desire to marry Avigdor changes Yentl's life forever.
Because Yentl is trapped by her disguise and unable to reveal her identity, she retreats to an inner world through dramatic and beautifully crafted songs.

A labour of love for co-producer/director/star Barbra Streisand, Yentl took 15 years to make it to the screen; by the time it did the genre - historical romance with musical numbers - was almost past its sell-by date.
Streisand plays Yentl, whose father has secretly tutored her in the Talmud - the primary source of Jewish religious law - throughout her childhood.
Love-triangle shenanigans ensue, with Yentl breaking into song every so often to express the frustration of her position.

That is the central situation in "Yentl." And when the critical moment came when Yentl had to decide what to do, I was quietly astonished to realize two things: (1) I did not have the slightest idea how this situation was going to turn out, and (2) I really cared about it.
I was astonished because, quite frankly, I walked into "Yentl" expecting some kind of schmaltzy formula romance in which Yentl's "secret identity" was sort of a running gag.
But "Yentl" takes its masquerade seriously, it treats its romances with the respect due to genuine emotion, and its performances are so good that, yes, I really did care.

Yentl's Revenge: The Next Wave of Jewish Feminism edited by Danya Ruttenberg | PopMatters Book Review
The story tells the tale of a Jewish girl who dons men's attire and assumes a male persona in order to infiltrate the elitist world of the scholarly rabbis and study the ancient texts alongside the other boys.
This third wave of Jewish feminists, however, have a different agenda on their minds than seizing the corporate reins of religious power and turning the tables on the males who've called the shots in their world.
All the writers, regardless of their individual experiences, have found their perplexing, sometimes aggravating, sometimes backward and oppressive faith to be a channel to knowledge of self and knowledge of the divine.

Women who fracture a wrist have an eight-fold increased risk of hip fracture compared to the general population, while in men, osteoporosis also carries an appreciable risk of hip fracture.
