Great Yeongnam Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Great Yeongnam Road, or Yeongnamdaero, was one of the principal roads of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty, 1392-1910.
It takes its name from Yeongnam, an alternate name for the Gyeongsang region.
In addition to officials and merchants, the road was used by scholars from Gyeongsang on their way to and from the gwageo, national examinations held in the capital.

PRECAMBRIAN GEOLOGY OF SOUTH KOREA: RECENT DEVELOPMENTS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The basement rocks of the Yeongnam and Gyeonggi massifs in general show low-pressure granulite-facies peak metamorphism with clockwise isothermal decompressional P-T paths, indicated by kyanite inclusions in the peak metamorphic assemblages.
We note that the nature of metamorphism, and the formation and metamorphic ages for the basement rocks in the Yeongnam and Gyeonggi massifs appear to be similar to those in the Central Zone (collisional orogen) of the North China craton, suggesting a possible correlation between North China and South Korea.
The supracrustal rocks in the Gyeonggi massif exhibit medium pressure amphibolite facies metamorphism with clockwise P-T paths that occurred in the Permo-Triassic, and thus share a similar Phanerozoic tectonothermal history to the rocks in the Imjingang belt, the presumed extension of the Qinling-Dabie-Sulu suture zone between the North and South China cratons.

PALEOPROTEROZOIC OROGENY OF THE YEONGNAM MASSIF IN SOUTH KOREA: COMPARISON BETWEEN SM-ND AND PB-PB GARNET AGES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
It is commonly believed that the geology and tectonics of the Korean Peninsula are closely associated with those of the Chinese continent.
We obtained Sm-Nd and Pb-Pb garnet ages from six metamorphic rocks of the Yeongnam massif in the southern part of the Peninsula to better understand Precambrian history of the basement rocks.
Since the blocking temperature of U-Pb garnet system is similar to or higher than the metamorphic temperature of the analyzed samples, we conclude that the Pb-Pb ages represent the timing of metamorphic garnet growth, and that the basement rocks of the Yeongnam massif metamorphosed ca.

The pre-Cretaceous basement comprises two Precambrian massifs, the Yeongnam Massif in the South and the Gyeonggi Massif in the north, which belong to the Sino-Korean microcontinent.
This two-fold discrimination seems to be in accord with the conventional idea that the older granites are genetically associated with the Jurassic Daebo orogeny and the younger granites with the Cretaceous Bulguksa disturbance in South Korea (Lee, 1987).
The Jurassic granites occur in the Gyeonggi Massif, the Yeongnam Massif, the Okcheon Belt, and the Gyeongsang Basin, whereas the Cretaceous granites occur in the Okcheon Belt and the Cretaceous Gyeongsang and Yeongdong-Gwangju basins.

Nd model ages from the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs are predominantly late Archean, with a few early Archean from the former.
However, recent studies of Phanerozoic tectonics in East Asia suggest that the Gyeonggi massif is part of the Yangtze craton (or South China block) whereas the Nangrim and Yeongnam massifs belong to the Sino-Korean craton, although overall geologic histories of the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs appear to be similar.
