Yerba Buena Island - Definition, explanation
As the natural base for the artificial Treasure Island, Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands formed the Treasure Island Naval Base, beginning during World War II until 1996, when it and the Presidio of San Francisco were decommissioned, and opened to public control, under stipulations.
Officially, the island was Yerba Buena until 1895, when on a decision by the U.S. Geographic Board, it was changed to "Goat Island." It was changed back to "Yerba Buena" on June 3, 1931.
The island is currently part of District 6 of the City and County of San Francisco.

And the steep slopes of Yerba Buena Island, though radically altered by invasive weeds and the hand of man, still harbor remnants of the original native flora, a population from which the landscape planners may wish to draw their inspiration.
The island was named Yerba Buena (Spanish for "good herb") after the creeping wild mint, Satureja douglasii, that once covered these shores.
Yerba buena looks delightful in the garden when trailing over a stone retaining wall or other hardscaping, and can soften the spaces between paving stones or beside paths.

Historic California Posts: Camp Yerba Buena Island
This 116 acre island, nicknamed Goat Island, situated in San Francisco Bay, about two and a quarter miles northeast of the city, was originally intended for the installation of artillery batteries in defense of the bay.
Established in 1868, it served however as a regular Army camp until 1880, when the island and the improvements built on it by the Army were transferred to the Navy Department.
A company of engineers were sent to the island and a post began to take shape on a low plateau near the eastern edge, the only area level enough for a camp.

In 1908, the facilities of the island were not sufficient to meet the requirements of the Fleet, and it was recommended that another training station on the west coast be established, to be located, preferably, in the vicinity of San Diego.
Yerba Buena, Spanish for "good herb", was the name applied to an aromatic little trailing vine, sometimes called California mint, and because it covered the slopes of the island, it is quite obvious why the island was so named.
