Due to its strategic significance, Yerevan was constantly fought over and it passed back and forth between the dominion of Persia and the Ottomans for centuries.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union Yerevan became the capital of the independent Republic of Armenia in 1991.

Armenia is a highly centralized population with over a third of its 3.3 million citizens living in Yerevan, which is the capital of the country.

So yesterday was a former Pagan holiday in Armenia known as Vardavar - a water festival of sorts today celebrated along side a church feast day.
When I first arrived in Yerevan I was expecting to rent an apartment with other young people in hopes of immersing myself completely in the language.
On the drive back to Yerevan, we passed close to border with Azeri enclave Nakhijevan where the grass hill had been lit aflame by lightening.
