Topic: Yerida

In the News (Tue 14 Feb 12)

  Encyclopedia: Yerida
In the past decade nearly a million immigrants came to Israel from the former Soviet Union.
Many Jews who emigrated to Israel have moved elsewhere, known as yerida ("descent" [from the Holy Land]), due to its economic problems or due to disillusionment with political conditions and the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict
The waves of immigration to the United States at the turn of the 19th century, massacre of European Jewry during the Holocaust, and the foundation of the state of Israel (and subsequent flight of Jews from hostile Arab nations) all resulted in substantial shifts in the population centers of world Jewry during the 20th century.

We are told that the reason for the golus, is that we should gather and collect and bring with us to the geulah, converts, which mean literal converts, and also the divine sparks that need to be brought back to holiness, they are also considered converts.
The answer is that all this darkness that we see, all the yeridas that are happening, these are only externally true, it's only on the surface, underneath, the exact opposite is true.

Yerida, of course, is the opposite of aliya, "ascent," or immigration to Israel, and the two words have been paired since talmudic times, aliya being the older of the two (it is already found in this sense in the biblical book of Ezra).
Interestingly, their meaning of coming to, and leaving, the land of Israel does not seem to have originated in the value system they later came to imply — that is, in the belief that "ascending" to Israel is a positive act and "descending" from it a negative one.
And yet long before modern times, the words aliya and yerida lost their topographical associations and became value-laden, "going up" to the land of Israel being considered a praiseworthy ascent in one's personal life, and "going down," the reverse.

Immigration is an ideologically charged concept which is reflected in the on-going rhetoric: immigration is "aliya" (going up) while emigration is "yerida" (going down).
This ideology and its supportive rhetoric have their roots in the pre-state period and have created a supportive mythology which has persisted to the present although "yerida" is presently accompanied by less derision than in the past.

I admit that this approach does not seem to "lamdush" but the idea that there were eras in our history where the yeridas hadoros engendered a qualitative yerida in the profundity of klal yisroels grasp of the Torah is not a foreign idea.
Thus, Rav Chaim Volozhiner explains the Mishna in Avos as follows: Moshe "keebail" Torah meysinai, Moshe accepted, meaning in its entirety, with a full grasp of the Torah, but it doesn't say and Yehoshua was "mikabel" from Moshe because Moshe's grasp of the Torah was qualitatively greater than Yehoshua's.
However, if there is a profound yerida, then, as the Chazon Ish states, "haemes cheeyaiv osam", the truth of the vastly superior grasp of the previous generations *obligated* these great men to accept their words unconditionally.

Eliezer, up to and including the bat kol, are rejected as not being part of the halachic process (ein meviin raya min heharuv, ein meviin raya me'amat hamayim, etc.), which is an orthogonal issue to the relative authority of batei din of different periods.
