There are portions in the opening movement where Mravinsky and Shostakovich almost seem to transmute tragedy into virtual horror.
In the marvelously expressive and exciting second and third movements, Mravinsky's presentation of the sometimes piercing and pungent winds and the powerful and abrupt interplay between percussion and brass reinforces credibility in the notion that his interpretation is convincingly right.
For me, Mravinsky's outstanding performance holds the line...Otherwise, on disc two containing Mozart's 33rd Symphony, the conductor sounds somewhat out of his element.

This is the most Shostakovichian recording since Mravinsky premiered it in 1937 with great succes.
Same goes for the 7th which is also a rocking piece; first in line is Mravinsky, then Jansons and Kondrashin and Haitink can conclude this.
