This is the same technology that led to the infamous production collapse of Oman's Yibal field, which “after 30 years of water injection pressure maintenance, embraced horizontal drills in 1990, then peaked in 1997 [at 225,000 b/d] and saw production fall by 65% by 2001.
Monstrous means up to 20% a year, as in the case of Yibal, yet Aramco shows that Saudi depletion rates are generally lower than those of many other large producers.
However, as an example of differences of interpretation perhaps, Aramco shows fallen giant Yibal as 4.3% annual depletion, in company with Prudhoe Bay and East Texas but less than half of a fast decliner like Brent.

The Yibal field was discovered in 1962 and is situated in North Oman approximately 450 km west/southwest of Muscat.
Yibal again experienced a rapid increase in production potential in 1990, when 71 new vertical producers were drilled.
The WOR development suggests that significant pockets of oil in the Yibal matrix are poorly drained as a result of the bypassing of water through the highly conductive fault and fracture network.

 Yibal Monitoring Project
Oil was discovered in Yibal in 1962 and the field has been in continuous production since that time with both oil and gas being extracted from the field.
In 2001, MIT became involved in the project through the acquisition of GPS equipment, analysis of the GPS data to determine both horizontal and vertical motions, and modeling of the surface motion in terms of subsurface deformations.
The Yibal monitoring project is a combination of five continuously operating Ashtech micro-Z GPS receivers that telemeter data in real-time using an Intuicom system to central location and three roving Ashtech micro-Z GPS receivers that over a 15-day period visit each of 45 rover sites around the network.

Oman’s Yibal field, which began production in 1968, is an excellent example of a field that has responded nicely to MRC wells combined with water flooding.
It is estimated that PDO has already recovered approximately 42% of Yibal’s oil in place, although it hopes to get the field’s recovery factor close to 55%.
Yibal’s life cycle is important because many of the same EOR techniques used on the field have also been employed on the world’s largest oil field, Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar.

Alexander's Gas & Oil Connections - Shell's Omani operations under new scrutiny
According to a report published on 8 April by The New York Times (NYT), internal documents and technical papers showed the Yibal field’s decline began in 1997, reversing a trend of consistently rising output since 1980; there was a decline of around 12 %/yr in 1997-2002.
The NYT reported that "internal Shell documents suggest that the figure for proven oil reserves in Oman was mistakenly increased in 2000, resulting in a 40 % over-statement." It quoted documents showing that executives were told reserves calculations were too high in 2002 -- two years before Shell downgraded its world-wide estimate.
Concerns were expressed that techniques lauded by Watts increased the amount of water in the extracted Yibal oil to as much as 90 % of total volume.

Yibal crashed dramatically like this and is down about 2/3rds from it's late 1990s (1997?) peak.
If the Yibal projection is correct then it takes just 8 years from onset of terminal depletion to end of production.
As little as one breath is known to produce a life-long addiction to the gas, which addiction invariably ends in death.

Green Car Congress: The Shadow of Yibal
You'll recall that earlier in the year, RoyalDutch/Shell wrote down its global oil reserves by 20%, a stunning event that led to the sacking of its chairman, Sir Philip Watts.
Based on Yibal, the answer seems to be: “Not as much as originally hoped.” (A related article from the Beirut, Lebanon Daily Star.)
For 30 years, the producers used water injection in Yibal to maintain the pressure in the reservoir to produce a high yield from the wells.

Then, at the request of the Government, PDO constructed a 345-kilometer, 20-inch pipeline to bring non-associated gas (that is, gas from gas fields rather than oil fields) from Yibal to Al Ghubra on the coast, where it fueled a power and desalination plant.
In 1980 a plant was opened in Yibal to produce the propane and butane that serve as the cooking gas for the country.
At the same time, plants for extraction of liquids from the associated gas were constructed in Yibal, Fahud and Saih Rawl, thereby utilising gas that would have been otherwise flared.

Aramco estimated Ghawar reserves to be 60 billion bbl in 1975 on the basis of 400 wells and a very clear mapping of the oil-water contact, which was enough information for a relatively accurate assessment, in Simmons view.
Instead, Yibal production dropped to 90,000 b/d in 2001 and is at about half of that today, Simmons notes.

Shell's determination finally yielded results, when, in 1962, there was an oil strike at Yibal.

The New York Times > Business > Oman's Oil Yield Long in Decline, Shell Data Show
Internal company documents and technical papers show that the Yibal field, Oman's largest, began to decline rapidly in 1997.
The company's falling production and reduced reserves in Oman are part of a broader problem facing Shell, the British-Dutch oil giant that earlier this year lowered its estimate of worldwide reserves, a crucial financial indicator, by 20 percent, or 3.9 billion barrels.
But a Shell document last fall did oes not project the technique to increase the amount of oil that will ultimately be recovered from the field, and it resulted in additional water being mixed in with the oil, increasing production costs.

The GGP was originally constructed by PDO at its Yibal field to process as much as two million cubic metres of gas per day, most of it to be delivered to the Al Ghubrah Power and Desalination Plant in Muscat, some 325km away, via a 20-inch pipeline.

EDCON, Inc. - GRAVITY GAINS MOMENTUM
Using a BHGM to determine gas saturation is an innovative use of the tool based on theoretical considerations and experience in sandstone reservoirs in Texas, USA.
To ensure the validity of the results in complex fractured carbonate reservoirs, a control test was planned in two new development wells over a gas-bearing formation in the nearby Yibal Field (figure 1.6).
This shows that the maximum and minimum gas saturations derived from the BHGM straddle the estimates from the resistivity log over the complete interval tested.
