But you should understand, many of us have relationships with different yidams over the course of time.....at least until one has become a lama, training in various yidams is a normal thing to do.
At some point, a student will, together with his lama, determine which Yidam deity will be most important for his or her practice, and that's the one the student will focus on.
I had figured a yidam would be assigned in a more linear way, but there it is. I just follow the advice of my lamas when they fine-tune my practice, then sometimes it fruitions in unexpected ways.
