Rav Yisrael's best-known work, his Iggeres haMussar is available on line in English (translated by R' Zvi Miller as part of Or Yisrael).
To me, the essence of Rav Yisrael Salanter's innovation is the realization that if man's task in life it to perfect himself, then one must actively engage in self perfection.
And in fact, Rav Yisrael took the idea even further, and applied man's duty to be holy, as the Ramban puts it "Sanctify yourself with that which is permitted to you" to find acts that go beyond the law to help one improve in particular areas that require work.

Similarly, the eyes of the children of Yisrael were "closed" to the spiritual enslavement by the Egyptians, which started imperceptibly with Yaakov's death.
Another reason that the Parsha is "closed" is that Yaakov wanted to reveal to his children the end of the final exile of the Jewish People, and the coming of the Moshiach, but his prophetic vision was "closed", and he was not able to reveal it.
Rather, Yaakov saw the exile beginning, and he realized that the Jewish People would be living outside of Eretz Yisrael, distant from the source of kedusha.
