Yo La Tengo aren't exactly victims, but they have taken their share of snipes from those who argue that their inspired genre-hopping is too reserved and academic, or that their recent albums have found them transformed into cushy pillow music for ageing hipsters.
Yet Yo La Tengo have persevered for 20 years on a wave of intensely loyal fans, critical acclaim, and a record collector's enthusiasm for eclecticism, which can be heard on their joyful new album.
Yo La Tengo was in many respects the quintessential critics' band: in addition to its adventurous eclecticism, defiant independence, and restless creative ambition -- three qualities that virtually guarantee music press acclaim -- the group's frontman, Ira Kaplan, even tenured as a rock scribe prior to finding success as a performer.

The second time I saw Yo La Tengo they opened the set with a couple of quiet acoustic numbers which were mostly drowned by the chatter of fans of the vastly over-rated Stereolab, and closed with such an amazing rendition of Blue Line Swinger that I was brought to tears.
Yo La Tengo seem eminently careful not to overdo such gobsmackingly climactic moments however, offsetting them with an eclecticism as skilful as it is enjoyable.
Yo La Tengo’s scraps are way more edible than most band’s main courses and this compilation is as good a starter for the newcomer as it is a source of mouth watering delight to long standing fans who didn’t even know they’d cooked up so many gourmet side dishes.

The voice belongs to guitarist/vocalist Ira Kaplan, one-third of the venerable rock trio Yo La Tengo (who come to the Somerville Theatre this Monday), and he's speaking from the Hoboken home (newly snowed in as we speak) he shares with drummer, co-lead singer, and spouse Georgia Hubley.
At this point, the writing and recording processes in Yo La Tengo are so collaborative that it's not entirely accurate to call the band members "guitarist," "bassist," and "drummer" -- a situation that's partly the result of McNew's increased input.
Yo La Tengo's lyrics have always been unpretentious and often openly romantic, but never more so than on three songs that might be taken as the thematic core of the current album.

Yo La Tengo is like both of those things.
Yo La Tengo has always been one to give you your moneys worth (many of their albums cross the 70 minute mark), and Summer Sun is no different, clocking in at well past an hour.
It's true that they could probably do a few snips here and there with many of their releases and end up with something slightly better, but as the title states, this is sort of a lazy little release and the run-length is never uncomfortable.

Yo La Tengo are, simply enough, a great rock n’ roll band, though their beginnings here are more modest than revelatory; a previous album, Ride The Tiger, was even less successful.
Featuring a fantastic mix of noisy feedback and dreamy guitar melodies, more and more Yo La Tengo are becoming a great groove-based band, as their swirling guitar romps rely ever more on a hypnotic repetition to achieve their entrancing results.
As an added bonus, Hubley sings more than on any Yo La Tengo album yet, though sometimes her vocals are mixed a little too low, causing some songs to drift by pleasantly but uneventfully.

Yo La Tengo: "Nuclear War" - Salon
Yo La Tengo (Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew) are something of a rock 'n' roll Swiss Army knife: murmuring love songs, epic organ freakouts, sweetly chiming pop, avant-rock noise assaults -- they can do it all.
The first of Yo La Tengo's four adaptations is all drums and chanting, and serves as the foundation for various (and you can't get much more various) guest artists to build upon.
You don't buy a Swiss Army knife for the tiny tweezers, and "Nuclear War" is certainly not the most essential record in the Yo La Tengo catalog.
