It comes as little surprise that Mark Schilling's contribution, about the Tora-san character in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo (It's Tough Being a Man) film series, is the most interesting - not necessarily because of the topic, but because Schilling is the only contributor who is a writer of any repute.
The essays dwell on four major areas of contemporary J-Pop Culture: music, manga and animation, TV and film and the popularity of J-Pop Culture outside of the country.
Schilling's Encyclopedia of Japanese Pop Culture (Weatherhill) remains the definitive starting point for those seeking a good, accessible introduction to the subject; Japan Pop!

MWB Band page for The yo-yo Contingency
The yo-yo Contingency could be best described as alternative pop: dork-rock substance added to folk-rock essence and pop-rock naiveté.
A closer listen provides subtle insight into the band’s influences — the melodic simplicity of The Eels; the dramatic ingenuity of They Might Be Giants; the lush textures of The Flaming Lips; and the earnest sincerity of Fountains of Wayne.
The infiltration of these elements are indirectly apparent, lending to a sound that is at once familiar and distinct.

MTV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MTV's combination of music videos, youthful video jockeys, irreverent commentary, promotion of special rock concerts, and news and documentaries about bands and performers established the network's popularity with youthful viewers, and it became a leading promoter of new rock music and rock musicians.
MTV UK has also been attacked for over-use of on-screen graphics, such as logos, programme promotion and countdown timers, and its electronica-themed genre channel MTV Dance is often derided for playing a lack of dance music during the day, preferring a mix of pop-dance, pop, and RandB.
MTV was created in 1977, when Warner-Amex Cable (a joint venture between Warner Communications and American Express) launched the first two-way interactive cable TV system, Qube, in Columbus, Ohio.

washingtonpost.com: Alejandro Sanz Tops Latin Grammys
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 -- Latin Grammy favorite Alejandro Sanz won four awards and Brazilian jazz songstress Maria Rita collected two Wednesday at a ceremony aimed at uniting Spanish- and Portuguese-language music with the flash and sizzle of American pop.
Sanz won the male pop vocal album award and album of the year for "No Es Lo Mismo" and song and record of the year trophies for writing and performing the album's title track.
He then uttered some of the language in a phrase that, politely translated, means: "Don't lie to me." In English, Lopez joked that it meant "Good luck in your future endeavors." CBS bleeped the joke.

Noise pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most noise pop bands owe a heavy debt to the influence of the Velvet Underground, but the style truly began in the 1980s underground scene: chief purveyors include The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, and Dinosaur Jr.
Noise pop is a term used to loosely describe a number of alternative rock bands that fuse punk rock's attitude and anger with the atonal noise, feedback, and free song structures of noise music, presented in a decidedly pop context.
Noise pop bands are considered inspirations for the shoegazing scene of the late 80's and early 90's; in fact, many shoegaze band could be considered noise pop.

Mandarin’s innate pop sensibility recalls vintage Pixies, which smoothens the complexity of their arrangements to coalesce their songs into progressive, singular, contemporary pop music.
Exuding a sometimes woozy, often quietly sinister vibe a la Pseudosix or Red Red Meat, Mandarin’s songs evolve and expand naturally, like the best of Yo La Tengo’s or Bedhead’s, enveloping the listener with their engrossing mood and textures.
Fast>Future>Present will swing this star into full view well beyond the thick Deep Ellum twilight and position Mandarin alongside the aforementioned luminaries, bewitching all those who fix their gaze upon it.

 The Yo-Yos
So impressive were these tracks that the band were almost immediately invited to join acclaimed Swedes, Backyard Babies on the road for their first ever UK tour, which gained the Yo-Yo's the notoriety of being one of the hottest unsigned bands around.
Another four songs were recorded in early 1999 for their second single and the band continued touring the UK, building up their following and finally signing to Sub Pop in October of that same year.
When the Wildhearts cancelled their '97 UK tour (to support their Endless Nameless album for Mushroom), the demise of the band was an inevitability, and their former bassist and singer was left free to pursue other projects.

As for love, well the Kaplan/Hubley husband/wife team have a more humanist outlook than the young Lou Reed and one facet of their genius is their unparalleled ability to wring tearjerking poignancy from that most overworked of pop song themes, the male/female relationship.
Yo La Tengo’s scraps are way more edible than most band’s main courses and this compilation is as good a starter for the newcomer as it is a source of mouth watering delight to long standing fans who didn’t even know they’d cooked up so many gourmet side dishes.
Yo La Tengo seem eminently careful not to overdo such gobsmackingly climactic moments however, offsetting them with an eclecticism as skilful as it is enjoyable.

BBC - Movies - review - Café Lumière (Kôhî Jikô)
Made by the Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien as a homage to the great Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, the luminously shot Café Lumière meanders through contemporary Tokyo in the company of a pregnant twentysomething writer Yoko (Japanese pop star Yo Hitoto), and her shy bookselling friend Hajime (Zatôichi's Tadanobu Asano).
Shooting in long takes, Hou Hsiao-Hsien steers clear of melodramatic confrontations: even when the single Yoko tells her parents of her pregnancy, her father remains his benignly taciturn self.
The plot may be almost non-existent, but who cares when a film is both this serenely beautiful and quietly insightful.

Happy Birthday MTV.....For Better Or Worse....
I liked MTV when it was a radio station with pictures, I'd say from 1981-1986. Those years happened to coincide with the years in which I also liked a lot of the pop music MTV played. MTV was never a wholesome institution,* but now it's sheer thuggery and quasi-pornographic swill.
