Born in Hiroshima, Shinkawa began working for game developer Konami in 1994; he was the first artist in the company to receive an "S"-grade evaluation for his portfolio.
Shinkawa's illustration style is generally praised as original and artistic yet technically accurate.
According to himself he is inspired by anime-related artists like Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Yoshitaka Amano, but also more western-related and less contemporary artists such as Frank Miller, Aubrey Beardsley and Willy Pogany.

Shinkawa: The high school teach I mentioned before said that an eye is a circle with the pupil and the white and light -- very symbolic.
Shinkawa for making the first MGS Art Book because I was asked to study diferent styles of drawing people/faces, and your book was great to look at and take exemples of your drawing style.

Shinkawa: The sketchbook illustrations and concept art are the same, but when we turn them into in-game models, I tend to add more detail when I work with the modelers.
Shinkawa: Well, I was really excited to see my characters in 3D when working on MGS, but it was a different experience to see the action figures based on my characters — they were actually tangible.
Shinkawa: Well, there are so many sports games out there, but none of the designs or character motions I've seen so far have really hit me. I know there's a way to improve the characters or overall design in a sports game, and it's something I'd like to do.

I think it is a masterpiece and Yoji Shinkawa is a critic and his evaluations can be pretty severe, but this time he thinks it's a masterpiece as well.

What I liked about Yoji Shinkawa's art, and the game itself was that he used alot of real weaponry and military gear along with his characters.
Yoji Shinkawa does all of the poster, character, and mechanical design art (hand-drawn) for the Metal Gear series, starting with MGS.
I do like this guy's (Yoji Shinkawa) artwork and if he's the one that drew the stuff in the metal gear artbooks than I do like his work.
