Yokosuka MXY8 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Yokosuka MXY8 Akigusa (秋草, "Autumn grass") was a training glider built in parallel with the Mitsubishi J8M rocket-powered interceptor aircraft.
The J8M was to have simply been a licence-built Messerschmitt Me 163, but due to difficulties in obtaining technical materials from Germany, it eventually had to be designed almost from scratch.
A more advanced trainer, the MXY9, equipped with a primitive jet engine was planned, but was never produced.

In the meantime, the First Naval Air Technical Arsenal in Yokosuka was working on a glider to validate the Shusui's aerodynamics.
Trials went well and two more glider prototypes were built at Yokosuka, one being handed on to the IJA.
At least 50 of the training gliders were built; the Navy wanted to develop a self-propelled trainer, the "MXY9 Shuka (Autumn Fire)", with a ducted fan engine, but it never happened.

 Mitsubishi J8M Shusui
Naval Air Technical Arsenal in Yokosuka, in league with Mitsubishi, work had begun on adapting the the Walter HWK 509A engine to Japanese manufacturing capacity and technique.
Also at this location, work was underway to produce a glider version of the J8M to provide handling data (the design was one Japanese aviators were totally new to) and also provide a quick solution to training pilots before conversion to the J8M.
The Navy initiated the construction of the MXY8, to be called the Ku-13, using water ballast to simulate the weights of the loaded J8M, this variant to be built by Maeda Aircraft Institute while the Army would have their version built by Yokoi Koku KK.
