Torah: Grunfeld’s Daf Yomi - When Yom Tov Makes a Shiva Visit
Just as Yom Tov has the power to cut short a Shiva, it has the power to cut short the Shloshim, provided that the relative began to observe the Shloshim, even momentarily, before Yom Tov.
Although Yom Tov does not have the power to cancel the Shloshim that was not begun before Yom Tov, it does have the power to shorten it.
This is because the arrival of Yom Kippur cancels the remainder of the Shloshim observed between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Yom Tov, however, is a day for developing and strengthening our relationships with one another.
It therefore follows that even when the burner was turned on before Yom Tov, the temperature may not be adjusted, since even a hot burner may actually be disconnected from the electrical supply.

Judaism 101 - Rabbi Yom Tov Lippmann Heller - Tosafos Yom Tov - A Glossary of Basic Jewish Terms and Concepts - OU.ORG
The author of one of the classic commentaries on the Mishnah, the “Tosafos Yom Tov,” Rabbi Yom Tov Lippmann Heller, was a “yasom,” an orphan from his father, from birth in the City of Wallerstein in the German Province of Bavaria, and was raised by his grandfather, Rabbi Moshe Wallerstein.
The “Tosafos Yom Tov” decreed upon his descendants that they celebrate the anniversary of his election to the Rabbinate of Krakow as a holiday.
This commentary is called “Tosafos Yom Tov,” after his name, with the incorporation of “Tosafos,” because he viewed the role of his commentary to the Mishnah as analogous to the role of the “Ba’alei HaTosafos” in relation to Rashi and the Talmud.

Shabbat Chol Hamoed - Rabbi Avrohom Gordimer - OU.ORG   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Shabbos Chol Ha-moed (as well as Shabbos which coincides with Yom Tov) is unique, for the character of the day is not just that of Shabbos as its own day alongside that of Moed, in which the two days and their respective themes exist on their own.
Yom Tov is quite the opposite, for it requires that we ascend to Yerushalayim and enter the realm of the Shechinah.
Thus, it is specifically on these Shabbos/Yom Tov days of special closeness between Hashem and Bnei Yisroel that we are able to have a greater understanding of our relationship with Hashem and immerse ourselves in the deeper avodah message of the Yom Tov.

The Use of Electricity on Shabbat / Rabbi Michael Broyde & Rabbi Howard Jachter and Yom Tov
Since there are those who permit the lighting of electric lights on Yom Tov, one should not strongly rebuke people who turn on lights on Yom Tov - specifically since many congregations in the Diaspora have this tradition with the approbation of their rabbis.
It also appears that any authority who permits turning on lights on Yom Tov (except perhaps for those who do so based on the indirect causation analysis, see note 55) must agree with the position of Rabbi Auerbach that there is no halachic obstacle to using electricity when no light and heat are produced.
The use of electricity on Shabbat and Yom Tov is a relatively new, and exceedingly complex, area of halacha.

 Weekly Daf #242
Eruv tavshilin is a rabbinic creation to ensure that one who cooks on Yom Tov for Shabbos will not mistakenly extend this right to cooking on Yom Tov for a weekday.
Rabba's position is that if one cooks on Yom Tov, even though he has no intention of eating from that food, he has not violated Torah law because there exists the possibility that unexpected guests may arrive who will enjoy this food on Yom Tov itself.
There is a rabbinic ban on cooking in such a case because it may lead people to cook for tomorrow even where no such possibility exists, but this ban is lifted when an eruv tavshilin is made as a distinction between the permitted and the forbidden.

Second Day Yom Tov, Eruvin and Eggs - By Raphael Grunfeld
Those communities, too distant from Jerusalem for the emissaries to arrive before Yom Tov, such as communities in the Diaspora, were forced to hedge their bets and keep Yom Tov for two days.
Because the Second Day Yom Tov was kept, out of doubt, as to which day in fact was Yom Tov, the Rabbis permit one, under certain circumstances, to take advantage of the doubt.
Similarly, although an egg laid on a Shabbat preceding a Yom Tov, may not be eaten the next day of Yom Tov, because food cannot be prepared on Shabbat for Yom Tov, an egg laid on the first day of Yom Tov, may be eaten on the second.

Rabbi Herschel Shachter - Regarding the Second Day Yom Tov for Visitors in Eretz Yisroel
Outside of Eretz Yisroel the rabbis of the Talmud here instituted the second day yom tov, not withstanding the fact that we already have a fixed calendar, and there is no longer any doubt regarding the correct identity of the day of yom tov [1].
For one from chutz laaretz who is only visiting Eretz Yisroel for yom tov it is well known that there is a difference of opinion among the poskim as to how many days of yom tov one must observe.
[6] Since the family was spending the yom tov together, and the majority of the members of the family had accepted the psak of their local rabbi, even the daughter should follow that opinion on this occasion, and only keep one day.
