Yom Yerushalayim, on the other hand, though often referred to, as a military miracle is so much more than that.
Yom Yerushalayim is the spiritual redemption as such, of our people, and therefore it seems more than apt that it be so close to Shavuot.

I call them the “Yoms.” Yom, in Hebrew means “day.” The four special days that can be found during the period of the Omer are 20th century additions to the Jewish calendar.
Seven days after Yom Yerushalayim, is Shavuot, falling on the 6th day of the month of Sivan, and completing the counting of seven weeks plus one day from the second day of Passover, as prescribed in the Torah.
Yet, the last of the four Yoms, Yom Yerushalayim, set in place by an event far from the control of any of those would celebrate it for years to come, falls neatly in place- seven days before the counting of the counting of the Omer ends and Shavuot, our spiritual deliverance, is celebrated.

 MyJewishLearning.com - Holidays: Yom Yerushalayim
Following the model of Yom Ha'atzmaut, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel has decided that this day should also be marked with the recital of Hallel (psalms of praise), and with the lengthier version of Psukei d'Zimra (the psalms in the earlier part of the morning service).
In addition, unlike Yom Ha'atzmaut--which is a day to celebrate the existence and successes of the modern Jewish state--Yom Yerushalayim can make some politically liberal Jews outside of Israel uncomfortable, due to the continuing conflicts over the future of the city.
A common citation in Yom Yerushalayim celebrations in Israel is the quote (Psalm 122:4) Ir shehubrah lah yahdaiv-- "a city that is compact together" or "a city uniting all." (This translation is probably influenced by a rabbinic midrash on this verse which interpreted the phrase to reflect events in rabbinic times.

Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day; literally "Day of Jerusalem") (28th of Iyyar) commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem at the time of the Six Day War in 1967, after 19 years of division, during which Jews were barred from visiting the Old City.
Though the Biblical motifs of restoration, reconciliation, and reversal of fortunes may be ancient, in the modern selection of the name "Yom Yerushalayim," we see them converge with the notion of "shlilat hagolah," the "negation of the Exile," a tenet of modern Zionism.
The influence of history may be seen in passage after passage in the mahzor (prayerbook): Kol Nidrei, at the beginning of Yom Kippur, stands as mute testimony to the vicissitudes of centuries of powerless exile and religious coercion; it asks that vows—such as forcible conversion—made without intention be considered null and void.
