York County is located in the Susquehanna Valley, a large fertile agricultural region in south-central Pennsylvania.
York County was created on August 19, 1749 from part of Lancaster County and named either for the Duke of York, an early patron of the Penn family, or for the city and shire of York in England.
The county is bound to its eastern border by the Susquehanna River.

Burton Edelstein, a pediatric dentist, spoke at a York and Adams Counties’ Dental Summit held in May. He is the founding director of the Children’s Dental Health Project and a renowned speaker on the subject.

This large and wealthy county, stretching for more than 50 miles along the west bank of the Susquehanna River, and 42 miles along the Maryland State line, has a remarkably varied geology, as yet very imperfectly understood.
The Tocquan anticlinal uplift of ancient (Laurentian?) gneiss mentioned in the account of Lancaster County (page 1xiv above) undoubtedly runs on through York County, and must be the starting-point for any thorough investigation into the age and structure of this Azoic strata of the county.
