York County is a county located on the Virginia Peninsula in the U.S. state of Virginia.
The county was formed in 1634 as Charles River Shire for King Charles I, one of the eight original shires in the Colony and Dominion of Virginia.
In 1949, the county grew by 4 acres, as land in that amount was ceded to York County by neighboring Warwick County.

York County Deeds and Orders, Book 2, p55 shows Thomas Reynolds on a list of people transported to VA by 1645.
On that date, records show that Thomas Reynolds of Blisland Parish, New Kent County, son of Thomas Reynolds, late of Queen's Creek, York County, with the consent of Susan Peace, late wife of Thomas Reynolds, deceased, deeded to Daniel Wyld of York County the land given to his father by Samuel Snead.

On 4 February 1642 (OS) (or 4 February 1643 (NS)), William Smoote was granted a land patent for 400 acres of land in what was then York County Virginia.
(Gloucester County was erected in 1651.) He was allowed this land because he transported eight (unnamed) persons into Virginia.
We do not see the Charles River today in Virginia, name of Charles River was changed to York River, about the same time the name Charles River County was changed to York County (1643).
