York Factory, at the mouth of the HAYES RIVER and close by the mouth of the Nelson River, was the most important HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY (HBC) trading post on Hudson Bay during most of the fur trade.
YORK BOATS, which carried the goods on the rivers and lakes of Manitoba, were named for York Factory.
York Factory was a frequent target for French attacks on the HBC fur trade.

The New York mission began in 1642, among the Mohawk, with the ministration of the heroic Jesuit captive, Father Isaac Jogues, who met a cruel death at the hands of the same savages 4 years later.
In 1783 Rev. Thomas Wood of Nova Scotia, having become acquainted with the Abbé Maillard and obtained the use of his Micmac manuscript, applied himself to the study of the language, dividing his ministrations thenceforth between the Indians and the whites until his death in 1778.
In 1869 he was appointed to the station at York Factory, on Hudson bay, where he remained until his retirement in 1878, after 26 years of efficient service in Manitoba and the Northwest.

 Hbc Heritage - Our History - Transportation & Technology - The York Boat
For over a century the York boat was the main mode of transportation between the inland trading posts and York Factory, the major transshipment point at the mouth of the Hayes River on Hudson Bay.
York boats were well adapted to northern conditions as well: they could travel in bad weather and weren't affected by the sharp edges of ice floes.
The coming of the railway to the west, and the dwindling importance of York Factory itself, saw to their inevitable decline.

The York Boat came into use in approximately 1823 for transport of supplies and furs to and from York Factory near the mouth of the Hayes River on Hudson’s Bay, to Hudson’s Bay Company posts which were accessible by water.
Ellen (Win) Linklater (nee Moar) remembered her childhood trip with several siblings by York Boat from her father’s post at Little Grand Rapids en route to their Cloverdale farm in the 1890’s (NE 8-14-4E).
With the development of steam ships in the 1880’s, which travelled the length of Lake Winnipeg to Selkirk, the need for York Boats declined and consequently the boat works at Norway House and York Factory were closed.
