There is also Clifton Bridge in the northern suburbs of the city, two modern fly-overs carrying the outer ring road and the former railway bridge at Naburn, which is now crossed by the York-Selby cycle path.
The Bridge was formally declared free of tolls on April 1, 1914.
Outside of the outer ringroad, the Naburn bridge used to carry the York- Selby railway until it was shut in 1964.

York's multi-tiered history kicks off with the Celtic Brigante tribe, whose presence led to the arrival of the ninth Roman Legion in 71 AD.
York regained some of its former regional glory with the coming of the railways in 1839, which placed the city firmly at the hub of the northeast.
The new millennium has brought mixed fortunes for York, with disastrous floods in 2000, the ongoing foot and mouth scare, and the building of yet another Millennium Bridge, this time most appropriately opened by Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

 Lune Millennium Bridge
The bridge is of cable-stayed construction, as are most major new bridges nowadays; unique features include the curved deck which sweeps round to join the old viaduct at the southern end, the gangway which gives access from the quayside and the twin masts which support the structure.
The bridge is a vital component in the National Cycle Network, a nation-wide project supported by the Millennium Commission and promoted by Sustrans, to establish a connected system of traffic-free and lightly-trafficked routes throughout the country.
The bridge has not been without its critics, and a vigorous campaign to stifle the project at birth was conducted by residents of the smart riverside flats on the Quay, headed by the artist Geoff Woodhead, adducing a number of practical and aesthetic objections.

The starting point for Merchants Bridge was the realisation, through studying the site constraints and user desire lines, that the deck needed to have a sweeping curve on plan and be of minimum thickness.
This Millennium bridge, which traverses the River Ouse, draws on the success of Merchants Bridge by providing not only a pedestrian and cycle link, but has been designed also to form a meeting place, the characteristics of which reach out along the banks of the river into the city.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge by Wilkinson Eyre
Gateshead Millennium Bridge is one of several linked regeneration projects along 'Gateshead Quays', and plays the essential role of linking this area accessibly to the center of Newcastle.
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge takes its place at the end of a line of distinguished bridges across the Tyne, including the Tyne Bridge and Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge, which can be seen well from the new bridge.
It is the bridge's design that requires these guide posts, but they show no sign of having been anticipated or treated as part of the esthetic design of the structure, which is a pity.

Even the first bridge across the Tyne was probably an impressive achievement: the Pons Aelius was commissioned by the Emperor Hadrian in AD120, an inspired architect as well as a soldier.
It beggars belief: a bridge, a world-class concert hall and art gallery, new hotels and homes, places to shop and eat, stop and stare on the banks of the Tyne, all for the price of a circus tent and its contents.
The big difference is that whereas no one knew what the Millennium Experience was for, and those who ran it were determined to keep it that way, the reinvention of Gateshead has a definite purpose and goal.

Wilkinson Eyre Architects and the Gateshead Council conceived the Gateshead Millennium Bridge over the River Tyne as a catalyst to regenerate the city of Gateshead.
The objective, therefore, was to deliver a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that could alter negative or neutral perceptions and provide a positive identity for the Gateshead independent of its opposing-shore neighbor.
The completion of the bridge on time and on budget is a quantifiable measure of success, but the project goals are also evident in local pride and continued international interest.
