York Region covers 1,776 square kilometres from Lake Simcoe in the north to the city of Toronto in the south.
Its eastern border is shared with Durham Region, to the west is Peel Region, and Simcoe County is to the northwest.
York Region's landscape includes farmlands, wetlands and kettle lakes, the Oak Ridges Moraine and over 2,070 hectares of regional forest, in addition to the built-up areas of its municipalities.

During the 1990s, the Region's economy performed well, although its rate of growth was only two-thirds of the national rate, primarily because of slower population growth and higher business costs (see Chart 1).
Although the Region's economic growth rate lags the national average, the gap narrowed in 1999 because of the strong stock market and a growing concentration of new high-value-added jobs in the Region.
The Region's banks could be more sensitive to rising interest rates and changes in mortgage preferences than banks elsewhere in the nation because almost one-third of the Region's banks are mortgage specialists, compared with 11 percent of banks elsewhere in the nation.
