The Regional Municipality of York, also called York Region, is a regional municipality in south-central Ontario, Canada, between Lake Simcoe and Toronto.
The population in 2005 was estimated at 890,000.
The Region of York signed a "Friendship Agreement" with the city of Omsk, Russia, on November 6, 1996, and later signed a "Twinning Agreement" on August 28, 1997.

 The Regional Municipality of York Water Supply
The Infrastructure Corridor Study Area for this project includes the eastern portion of the Town of Markham and the southeastern portion of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville in the Regional Municipality of York and the western portion of the Town of Pickering in the Regional Municipality of Durham.
In addition to the consultation discussed above, and at the Town's request, York Region has agreed in principle to the negotiation of a Community Benefits Agreement during the preparation of the EA with the objective of having an agreement in place prior to the submission of the EA for approval to the Minister of Environment.
The Region of York is committed to obtaining the necessary approvals at the appropriate time of the implementation phase.

York was captured, its surrender negotiated by John Strachan, and its major buildings burned by U.S. soldiers in 1813 (during the War of 1812).

Through the JWMG, the two Regional municipalities must address the social, environmental and financial impacts of managing the waste that remains after recycling and composting by way of an Environmental Assessment (EA) under the Provincial EA Act.
The Proposed EA Terms of Reference were submitted to Durham and York Regional Councils in December, 2005 and subsequently filed with the Ministry of the Environment for approval.
