York Region’s population was 166,000 and a small unit of uniformed officers, local municipal units and York County officers made up police services.
In 2001 York Region experienced a significant increase in the number of hate crimes reported, such as hate graffiti, vandalism to religious facilities and copycat anthrax scares.
York Regional Police has joined efforts with other agencies, including the York Region District School Board, York Region Health Services, Ministry of Transportation, and CN and CP Police to reduce the number of traffic accidents, seat belt violations, and to improve safety at railway crossings and school zones.

The Police also state that any inconsistencies or inaccuracies in the primary officer's version of events are based on the passage of time and the fact that there are no notes of certain conversations during which no substantive information was received.

About a week after her disappearance, York Regional Police said in the absence of any evidence near her home, they were focusing their investigation on foul play, specifically abduction.
In late August, the Ontario Provincial Police behavioural science unit said they believed Ross was taken by someone she knew and felt comfortable with.
Police cars barricaded the street near the Ross home Wednesday, and yellow police tape surrounded the house next door as investigators went in and out.
