The college was originally founded as a teacher training institution by the York Diocesan Society for the Education of the Poor, part of the Church of England.
The college opened its doors in 1841 as the Training School for Masters, followed in 1846 by a school for Mistresses when the men’s college was moved to Lord Mayor’s Walk, the location of the modern-day campus.
The college became known by its current name of St. John in the 1890s, and in 1974 united with the women’s college, forming a single institution.

This society would be known as the York Diocesan Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church to further the work of the National Society in the northern provinces.
In 1812 the diocese of York was one of the largest in England, for it included the entire county of York, the rural deaneries of Richmond, Catterick and Boroughbridge excepted (these three deaneries being part of the unwieldy diocese of Chester), and the entire county of Nottingham.
The early archives of what later became the College of Ripon and York St. John reveal that those involved were honest men who tried to fulfil their voluntary obligation to educate the poor children of York diocese.

John's College was decided as the name for the new institution and in 1853 E. Hicks deeded to the Trustees of St. John's College a tract of land of 109 acres near the corporate limits of the town of Oxford, at a price of $4,480.00.
It was suggested that St. John's College at this time be made a military school, and again, as the war broke out, this was renewed with an effort to offer it to the State for this purpose, but such was never done.
John H. Mills, with his old wagon and his foraging trips are still remembered by many, and later a little group of children, singing and taking collection, was the source of considerable help and formed a basis for the present singing class of the institution.
