Yorker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In cricket, a Yorker is a delivery where the cricket ball bounces on the cricket pitch on or near the batsman's popping crease.
The main strength of the yorker is as a surprise weapon, when the batsman has become accustomed to hitting shorter-pitched balls and not using the bat with the speed necessary to defend against a yorker.
Yorkers are also notoriously difficult to bowl correctly, as a slight variation in length can mean the yorker will pitch just short of the batsman—making the ball into a half volley that is easy to hit—or will reach the batsman without bouncing—which makes the ball a full toss, that is also easy to hit.

Angell Reminisces in Book on New Yorker
If the history of The New Yorker could be captured in a single life, honors would likely fall to Roger Angell, who at age 85 predates the magazine itself and remains as vital as the publication he literally grew up with.
Interviewed recently at The New Yorker offices, Angell is improbably youthful and attractive, with a trim, elegant mustache and a bearing both dignified and irreverent.
Angell has contributed parodies, short stories and Christmas poems to The New Yorker, but he has most distinguished himself by his editing and his baseball essays, the literary notes of an admitted amateur that began in the early 1960s when the magazine was seeking to expand its sports coverage.

Adler and Yagoda both mention the ethic of ironic silence that permeated the magazine during the later Shawn period, which in Yagoda's account caused writers such as Joseph Mitchell to fade into a weird half-realm of presence and absence, writing and not writing.
If the New Yorker was something of an imponderable institution in its own right, it's also a symbol of the vanished world over which it presided.

Adler's book, which is causing the most stir, depicts The New Yorker as a snake pit of intriguers and flatterers trying to curry favor with successive editors.
Her complaints are specific, like recalling when William Shawn, Ross's successor as the editor of The New Yorker, wanted to cut an article, or when Shawn scheduled pieces and then dropped them.
It is as if former contributors to The New Yorker are writing their books to recapture a vanished past, a paradise where Shawn nurtured them as if they were children.

Issued as part of the New Yorker's eightieth anniversary celebration, this greatly oversize, undeniably heavy, but amazingly low-priced volume collects, in two formats, the cartoons that have appeared in the pages of that magazine over the course of its distinguished publishing history.
Home to outstanding prose and poetry, the New Yorker has also enjoyed an outstanding reputation for its weekly showcasing of socially and politically satiric and, yes, cerebral--but also downright hilarious--cartoons from some of the most popular, cutting-edge, and stiletto-sharp cartoonists of the day.
I suppose if there is such a thing as cultured (nee elitist) cartoons, this would be the place to find them, but this has certainly been a rich vein of humor for these talented artists to mine all these years.

Here was an editor who was concerned with every level of the magazine: he kept a card catalog with story ideas but was equally obsessed with language, commas, typos, and even the vexed question of large or small capital letters.
His entertaining and informative letters touch on both his personal life and The New Yorker's notorious problems and achievements-its economic, legal, literary, and artistic struggles; its famous writers; and a wide collection of Ross's friends and acquaintances.
The book may be a bit abstruse in places for those who do not know the history of the "New Yorker" during the Ross editorship, but there seems to be enough comedy throughout to maintain even a casual reader's interest.
