  Yorketown - Southern Yorke Peninsula
Yorketown takes it's name from the region, however at one time it was suggested it be named Salt Lake City in recognition of the 200 salt lakes within a 13 km.
Yorketown and surrounding areas were very dependent on the salt industry for employment creation, especially through the 1900's - 1920's.
Yorketown is a major business centre within the Southern Yorke Peninsula Region: retail is one of the main draw cards for people visiting our town.

As chairman (1945) of the committee which organized the first children's book week in South Australia, she argued that children should be given access to a wide range of material and taught how to find information themselves.
Convenor (1949-79) of the international committee of the National Council of Women of South Australia, she was a member of the Australian-American and United Nations associations, and a council-member of the Wanslea Emergency Home for Children (1962-68) and of St Ann's College, University of Adelaide (1953-55).

 Salt production in South Australia
In Australia, salt is produced by solar evaporation from sea water, saline lake waters, underground brines and harvested from dry lake beds.
Today about eighty per cent of all salt is produced in Western Australia whereas before 1966 it was South Australia which produced that amount.
Around Yorketown some two hundred local farmers were involved in the scraping of the lakes resulting in suggestions to call the area Salt Lake City.

 Ludbrook, Nelly Hooper - Australian Women Biographical entry
Nelly Ludbrook, née Woods, was the first South Australian born palaeontologist to demonstrate the importance of palaeontology to the mining industry and founded what is now known as the Biostratigraphy Section of Mines and Energy, South Australia.
Her subsequent career included appointment as assistant geologist with the Commonwealth Government from 1942-1949, a period in London from 1950 at the Imperial College where she gained a PhD in geology and the DIC in palaeontology for a study of Pliocene molluscs from strata underlying the Adelaide Plains.
On the death of her husband she returned to South Australia in 1952 where she was employed as technical information officer for the Mines Department, and in 1957 was appointed palaeontologist, a position she held until her retirement in 1967 as senior palaeontologist.
