YORKSHIRE Bank last night became the first major financial institution to axe its final salary pensions, leaving thousands of staff facing an uncertain retirement because of a £426m deficit.
Yorkshire Bank joins a list of companies, including Rentokil and the Co-op, that have been heavily criticised for trying to scrap the final salary scheme in recent weeks and underlines the pensions crisis facing millions of workers.
Yorkshire Bank's parent NAB said the move was designed to put its pensions on a more secure footing.

Yorkshire bank are still threatening me, their own solicitors have already said that they are not willing to proceed because I have witnesses to the abuse and the fact that I cancelled all my direct debits at that time but they didn't cancel any of them to get more charges onto the account.
The staff are still abusive, the charges are rediculous, the management is non-existant, the Bank is only out to charge as much as they can to their customers and YORKSHIRE BANK are guilty of THEFT.

YORKSHIRE BANK'S parent company National Australia Bank (NAB) has refused to rule out a sale of the business, fuelling speculation that the bank chain could be sold off along with sister bank Clydesdale.
She added that Yorkshire and Clydesdale have not been as affected as some rivals as the banks' main growth is from business and housing loans as opposed to credit cards and personal loans.
Yorkshire Bank chief operating officer David Thorburn said the northern branches were leading the way.

Brian Waite, 33, of Leeds, was part of a masked gang that attacked a security guard with baseball bats as he delivered the cash to a branch of HSBC.
The gang drove from their Yorkshire base to raid the bank in Llanishen, Cardiff, on 2 November 2001.
Their stolen getaway car was later found burnt-out about half-a-mile from the bank.
