Rugby originated in England and is played throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, and is the national game of Wales.
Rugby union is played on a rectangular field, divided into equal halves with goalposts at each end (the try-line) comprising two uprights and a crossbar.
By 1907, when the first league was formed, the new Union's rules had diverged from those of Rugby Union, most noticeably in the reduction of players from 15 to 13 and slightly different scoring.

The Rugby League was formed when the Northern Clubs broke away from the RFU because, in 1893 the Yorkshire clubs proposed allowing players to be paid six shillings 'broken-time' payments when they missed work due to matches.
This was the birth of the Rugby League.
The League wanted to make their game more attractive to watch and in 1897 they removed the lineout, made a try 3 points and reduced the value of all goals to 2 points.

The rugby players of Yorkshire and Lancashire were constantly reminded of successful, well-organised, fully professional soccer clubs in the same towns when they themselves were actually losing money in order to play their favourite sport.
The traditional Rugby Union game was in the main a close marking game where the game could stay in one part of the field for comparatively long periods, this made it less a attractive as a spectator sport than games like soccer which did draw big crowds in the North.
In fact, the first Northern Rugby League competition was played over the 1901/2 season Runaway first champions were Broughton Rangers whose form was so outstanding that as early as February they could not be over taken at the head of the Rugby League table.
