Yoshitoshi was originally named Owariya Yonejiro, and was given the name Yoshitoshi by his master Kuniyoshi, one of great masters of the Japanese woodblock print, to whom he was apprenticed at 11, in 1850.
Yoshitoshi's first print appeared in 1853, but nothing else appeared for quite some time, perhaps as a result of the illness of his master Kuniyoshi during his last years.
Yoshitoshi's courage, vision and force of character gave ukiyo-e another generation of life, and illuminated it with one last burst of glory.

Yoshitoshi published his first print in 1853, the same year the Tokogawa government opened trade negotiations with the west, initiating a period of rapid social and political change in Japan.
Yoshitoshi's erratic career and personal life, punctuated by periods of mental instability and depression, mirrored the tumultous period during which he lived.
Yoshitoshi was keenly interested in preserving traditional Japanese culture and values and he used his art to this purpose by choosing historic and legendary subjects for many of his designs.

While Yoshitoshi’s reputation grew, his health failed, but he continued to produce an astonishing number of prints, in fact, these years proved to be his most prolific, in terms of quality and quantity.
Yoshitoshi died in 1892 at the age of 53.

 Comic creator: Yoshitoshi Tsukioka
In 1850, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka became a pupil of the famous master Kuniyoshi Utagawa.
Recovered from a nervous breakdown in 1873, Tsukioka produced many important works, including his series on the Seinan Senso in 1877, 'Dainihon Meisho Kagami' in 1878 and 'Tsuki Hyakusha' in 1885.
Yoshitoshi Tsukioka was committed to a mental institution in 1891, where he died the next year.

 Taiso Yoshitoshi 100 Aspects of the Moon
Taiso Yoshitoshi was born in the city of Edo (now Tokyo) just before Japan’s violent transformation from a medieval to a modern society.
Yoshitoshi’s confrontation with the savagery and violence of his times, especially early on in his career, was exorcised through a prolific and bloody series of prints depicting battling warriors, demons and murderers.
While continuing to choose native themes for his prints, Yoshitoshi’s approach to creating individualized portraits of townspeople, farmers, courtesans and warriors was innovative and groundbreaking.

I have a first edition of the Yoshitoshi Hikosaburo V print in fine condition which led me to delve further.
This series which was the last of Yoshitoshi's "newspaper prints" was issued once a month to newspaper subscribers for a total of 20 months during 1886-1888.
The book also provides an illuminating section on Yoshitoshi's involvement with newspapers which provided him excellent pay, visibility and a springboard for his later important series.
