You Only Live Twice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You Only Live Twice is the twelfth novel by Ian Fleming featuring James Bond, secret agent 007; it was published in 1964, around the time Fleming died.
A rock version of You Only Live Twice was covered by Coldplay when they toured in 2001, and was covered by Natacha Atlas for her 2005 compilation album The Best of Natacha Atlas.
The only other Bond girl likewise unidentified is Octopussy, whose real name is never revealed (although in the movie, Octopussy gives her father's last name as Smyth).

As so often in You Only Live Twice, part of her strength is simply that she is so interesting and unconventional; and her actions at the end of the novel suggest that she is more than capable of getting what she wants.
I think what makes You Only Live Twice such a masterpiece is that it perfectly reflects Fleming's state of mind when he wrote it, shot through, as it is, with thoughts of mortality and rebirth.
Unrealistic though YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE undoubtedly is (and let us face it, Fleming cannot be noted for his realism), the novel is nevertheless not impaired because of it.

Review: You Only Live Twice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Forever remembered as the "Japanese Bond", You Only Live Twice takes 007 to the Far East for his fifth screen adventure, Sean Connery's final consecutive appearance as the top British agent (the actor returned to the role twice more: 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and 1983's Never Say Never Again).
The first half of You Only Live Twice is very good, with several skillfully-executed action sequences and the development of an unexpectedly warm relationship between Bond and Aki.
It's only during the second half, as the plot escalates beyond the bounds of preposterousness, that the film starts to fragment.

While You Only Live Twice is the last in an unbroken run of Connery performances, his presence is easily the strongest element of the movie.
The saddest aspect of You Only Live Twice is, however, the dreadful and uninspired screenplay of Roald Dahl.
Ultimately You Only Live Twice is a short attention span movie, easily left and returned to, with lots of bang for your buck.

Savant Review: You Only Live Twice
You Only Live Twice is not generally considered one of the best of the Bonds.
You Only Live Twice was the first movie Savant felt had been spoiled by over-promotion, in the way that almost every new film is spoiled in today's entertainment culture.
Twice was the first Bond which was utterly fantastic at its root, a Science Fiction movie where Bond became an unlikely Buck Rogers.

Plot Outline: After faking his own death in a bid to throw off some enemies on his trail, James Bond travels to Japan where he finds out that SPECTRE is behind a plot to start a war between Russia and America by capturing space rockets using a secret space capsule.
The only let downs are some ridiculous looking special effects which usually involve a character driving a car with back rear projection.
Final Verdict: You Only Live Twice is easily in the top 10 Bond films to date and it's a hell of way to get someone interested in the world's greatest secret agent.

You Only Live Twice was to be Sean Connery's last outing as the superspy, but he was of course enticed back one more time for Diamonds Are Forever.
By this stage, John Barry had established himself as the composer for Bond and was broadening his standing as a film composer of some note after winning his first Oscar for best original score in 1966 with Born Free and in another in 1968 for his stupendous choral led writing for The Lion in Winter.
Perhaps the most famous aspect of You Only Live Twice is the descending string motif that opens the song and becomes a low key accompaniment throughout.

While Bond scores are rarely a model of complexity, You Only Live Twice seems to be made up of fewer components than usual and the previously unreleased cues generally reprise that contained on the original album, albeit in different arrangements.
You Only Live Twice undoubtedly has plenty of fine moments, but even leaving aside its status as a Bond score, is a touch repetitive and slow going at times.
Unlike most of the other expanded releases which can be played in the correct order simply by programming the CD player, You Only Live Twice has longer suites in the bonus section and so many of the original album cues come within the longer, previously unreleased tracks.

This is probably for the best because although You Only Live Twice is a decent book, it would have made a terribly boring movie.

You Only Live Twice, like most of the other James Bond soundtrack albums in the series during the 1960's, had more music than could easily be contained on one LP.
The annotation is very interesting, however, and the improved sound is a considerable virtue -- in addition to which, You Only Live Twice" was always the least easily available of all the Bond soundtracks on CD, so it's not as though this will be an upgrade so much as an initial purchase for most people.
