The Youghiogheny River (pronounced yah-kuh-GAIN-ee) is a tributary of the Monongahela River, approximately 135 mi (217 km) long, in the U.S. states of West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
The Youghiogheny rises in northern West Virginia, in Preston County southeast of Kingwood and near Backbone Mountain.
Upstream from Confluence, Pennsylvania, approximately 6 mi (10 km) north of Pennsylvania border, the river is impounded by the 184 ft (56 m) high Youghiogheny Dam to form the Youghiogheny River Lake, a reservoir that stretches upstream into northern Maryland.

Trout are the dominant species in the upper river and overall the trout catch rate increased from one trout for every 1 1/4 hours of fishing in 1994 to one trout for every one hour of fishing last year.
A total of 33 percent of the trout caught in that Youghiogheny Dam section were harvested, compared to 12 percent in the Casselman to Ohiopyle Falls section; 19 percent in the Ohiopyle Falls to Indian Creek stretch and 11 percent in the Indian Creek to South Connellsville Dam section.

The river saw the face of young George Washington, in 1754, when he led his small army of Virginian militia through the area in the hopes of constructing a fort at present day Pittsburgh, but upon reaching the great falls of Ohiopyle, Washington abandoned hope of using the river as a route to Pittsburgh.
The river was also crossed, with the assistance of George Washington and some of the other surviving officers, by the mortally wounded General Edward Braddock, who would die near the remains of Fort Necessity days later.
