Young Americans is an album by David Bowie released in 1975.
Young Americans contained his first number one hit in the U.S., "Fame", co-written with John Lennon (who also contributed backing vocals), and one of Bowie's favourite guitarists and band members, Carlos Alomar.
As for Bowie's growth as an artist, the highlight of the album comes when he stops the band and asks, "Isn't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry?" With any other pop singer in the world, you'd know that he or she wanted to be taken seriously.

"Young Americans" is a masterpiece, and "Fame" had a beat funky enough that James Brown ripped it off, but only a handful of cuts ("Win," "Fascination," "Somebody up There Likes Me") comes close to matching their quality.
As a result, Young Americans is more enjoyable as a stylistic adventure than as a substantive record.

While the hit singles from this album ("Fame", co-written with John Lennon, and the title track) still sound a bit stilted to me, there is a sense of purpose here that flies in the face of convention, a characteristic that I had originally missed completely.
Young Americans moved Bowie about as far away from that persona as he could have gotten at that time, and although it was an extraordinarily awkward transition, it worked, but it didn't work as a change in style as much as it worked as a musical change.

Bowie Golden Years : Young Americans
For a corps of ten "Bowiemaniacs" who maintained a sleep-out vigil in front of Sigma and who greeted, begged autographs and won kind words from their main man upon his entrances and exits (Bowie worked from the early evening into the late morning), the Sigma sessions were apparently as traumatic as they were God-sent.
The album, thanks to Bowie's organized approach he would prepare reams of precise arrangements during the day for efficient, methodical run-throughs at night had come together quickly and, it appeared, to the considerable satisfaction of all concerned.
With wine, tears and adulation flowing around and from the blessed, Bowie was an affable host as he signed more autographs, apologised for the unfinished mix of the album and agreed to play it a second time, at which point the party erupted into dance.
