Young reasoned that a 1962 audience might not buy a hero who simply did his job and in the meantime slept with any woman he felt like, without seeming as derelict as the villain he was disposing of.
Young knew that if James Bond were going to differentiate himself from the standard, run of the mill hero, he needed three things that heretofore the character was lacking.
Young had done his job and felt that with FRWL Bond had been taken about as far as he could be without moving drastically away from the thriller genre into the general entertainment field.

Fortunately, Higson is a genuine Bond aficionado who has remained true to the style of Ian Fleming’s creation, and his legend, to create an authentic story featuring a teenage Bond that should not disappoint other equally appreciative fans.
But young James is not without a backbone of his own, and he soon begins to win small victories against those who choose to bully him.
Bond purists might wince a little, that such an extension of Fleming’s legacy was needed at all, but despite being shackled by the constraints of its period setting, Silverfin is an intriguing read.

 Starlog - Ghastly Review
Bond creator Ian Fleming said very little about the hero’s early years, although he did note that Bond was raised by his Aunt Charmian after his parents’ deaths and was educated at Eton-—at least until he was thrown out.
This information, though, was enough for Ian Fleming Publications—-which controls the Bond literary rights and is run by the Fleming family—-to conceive of a prequel series of at least five books that would be aimed primarily at the same market that devours the Harry Potter novels.
(However,) “Bond is known for spying, and I thought it was important that we had some link in the books to who he’s going to become,” says Higson.

Nevertheless, the backlash over Bond driving a Toyota in the last Bond film, 2006's Ashes to Burn, makes an ironic contrast to the reversal of fortunes of TVR, who have seen sales rocket as a result of 008's penchant for the British-made sports cars.

Ironically, I came across Worthington a few weeks ago, thought he'd make a decent young Bond and mentioned him on a few Bond fansite message boards.
Worthington seems closest to what the producers have said they are looking for: a 28-year-old Bond who will mature into the cold killer we know (and who is more Jason Bourne than Roger Moore).
He'll next be seen in the title role in M, a modern MacBeth from Romper Stomper director Geoffrey Wright that co-stars rumored Joker contender Lachey Hulme.

Is Bond Too Young? - Cinematical
While the rather massive change can be explained by the fact that the character is 28 when he's introduced in the source novel, demographic concerns are much more likely to have driven the decision than a desperate desire for fidelity to Ian Fleming's wishes.
After all, in Casino Royale (the novel), Bond is described as looking like Hoagy Carmichael, and Fleming himself suggested Carmichael and David Niven for the role, and you don't see anybody in the casting rumors who looks like those two.
It's alright to reinvent the character and such, when you think of Bond, you think of a Man, not a young man, not someone who is green, but someone who is a take charge kind of person.
