Young British Artists - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Young British Artists or YBAs is the name given to a group of conceptual artists, painters, sculptors and installation artists based in the United Kingdom, most (though not all) of whom attended Goldsmiths College in London.
Another artist who picked up on this theme was Tracey Emin who started her Tracey Emin Museum in Waterloo Road in 1996.

Tracey Emin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tracey Emin (born 3 July 1963) is a British artist, one of the so-called Young British Artists (YBAs).
She is probably only second to Damien Hirst among the YBAs in terms of notoriety among the general public.
Emin's father was married to a woman other than her mother and while still young he abandoned the family which lead to a decline in their standard of living, an event which has featured in a number of works.

British Artists Have Been Taking Risks, and Flak, for Years
These artists emerged as a potent force in London in the early 1990s, and their work forms the core of the "Sensation" exhibition now generating so much light and heat at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
Young artists saw the rest of the country kicking to life in a capitalist way, so they decided to put on their own shows and exhibitions, rather than waiting for galleries."
The Young British Artists were welcomed, too, in the frisky European contemporary art world, giving London an international reputation for being a place where things were happening again.

Another point to be considered in relation to the emergence of the 'Yba' was the economic climate that surrounded them, with their work first shown on the cusp of the boom and bust of the late 1980's.
In short, what we have is a group of young artists who, due their own foresight and entrepreneurial powers have risen in fame and celebrity, alongside a renaissance of the swinging London, to achieve near mythical status.
As she asks: "How much longer can artists, most of them now in their thirties, be supposed to conform to this essentially rebellious adolescent role?"17 It must surely, then, only be a matter of time before the ideological threat of this group passes, and they shall be dismissed as yet another tired fad.

CNN - Young artists making a 'Sensation' in London - October 26, 1997
Although many of the featured artists have won international acclaim and fame, some critics say their brand of "shock art" fails to reach the creative heights attained by old masters.
Artist Mat Collishaw's "Bullet Hole" reproduces a closeup shot of a bullet in the brain.
Lee said such exhibits are becoming more common among artists, who correlate fame to the amount of press coverage they generate, often to the detriment of their long-term artistic impact.

Tate | Glossary | Young British Artists (YBA)
In the late 1980s British art entered what was quickly recognised as a new and excitingly distinctive phase, the era of what became known as the YBAs - the Young British Artists.
Young British Art can be seen to have a convenient starting point in the exhibition Freeze organised, while he was still a student at Goldsmiths College in London in 1988, by Damien Hirst, who became the most celebrated, or notorious, of the YBAs.
Goldsmiths, which was attended by many of the YBAs, and numbered Michael Craig Martin among its most influential teachers, had been for some years fostering new forms of creativity through its courses that, for example, abolished the traditional separation of the media of art.

YOUNG BRITISH ARTISTS OF TWO ERA'S FRANCIS BACON & DAMIEN HIRST The themes of time, decay and flesh, coupled with death and destruction are subjects, which seem to hold a particular fascination for two artists of the twentieth century; Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst.
There are some examples of artists in earlier periods dealing with these subjects such as Boticelli and his depictions of Dante’s hell theme, but these are isolated examples.
There are examples of work from other artists contemporary with Bacon which deal with destruction and decay; the most famous of which must be Pablo Picasso’s (1882 to 1973) Battle of Guernica which was painted in a few months in 1937.
